Suicide Squad Director David Ayer Defends James Gunn After Nepotism Backlash Following Wife Jennifer Holland's Multiple DC Appearances: "Right now you have the hardest job in Hollywood"

As if James Gunn wasn’t embroiled deep in endless controversy already, he just got yet another target to look out for as fans have been calling him out on his apparent nepotism. While it merely started as speculation and debate amongst people on the internet, the question of Gunn misusing his professional authority to favor his wife has quickly turned into a wildfire of allegations against the DC Studios co-head pinned by fans.

Meanwhile, Fury director David Ayer seems to have taken the line of defense, as the 55-year-old rushed to Gunn’s rescue on Twitter, preaching the classic ‘haters gonna hate’ tune to keep said rumors of nepotism at bay. One Suicide Squad director to another, perhaps.

David Ayer Defends James Gunn Against Nepotism Controversy

When a Twitter user asked James Gunn to “stop putting his wife in every DC project,” the latter responded to it by claiming how 2021’s The Suicide Squad was the only ever DC film that he actively cast Jennifer Holland in. “I had nothing to do with the casting of any other movie – anything else was shot a year or so ago while I was deep in Vol 3,” the Guardians of the Galaxy director stated.

He even went ahead to say that the only reason why people are attacking him on his seemingly nepotistic actions was because they are “deeply in need of reasons to hate.” Backing him up on that particular statement, Suicide Squad filmmaker David Ayer hopped on the social networking site to further defend DCU’s co-CEO.

Talking about the “high road of positivity and creation,” Ayer remarked how there will always be people devoted to taking “cheap shots” at others. He then praised Gunn, 56, for making “the hardest job in Hollywood” look like a piece of cake, subtly hinting toward the latter’s plights and toils with regard to his work.

Appreciating his co-worker and friend’s support, Gunn left a simple “You’re the best” response under Ayer’s comment section.

Why James Gunn is Being Accused of Nepotism

Not long ago, discussion about James Gunn‘s wife Jennifer Holland being in one too many DCU projects was sparked up by some fans. But what started as a harmless debate initially soon ended up turning into a full-fledged allegation against the filmmaker as people started to point fingers at him for the same.

Holland, 36, is an actress and model best known for portraying the calculated and witty NSA agent Emilia Harcourt and has played the character in several DCU projects including Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad, both of which were helmed by her husband. Her most recent appearance was as a cameo in Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam.

Though Gunn got married to the American Pie actress only recently in 2022, the two had been dating since 2015 and have collaborated on the professional front on more than one occasion since. While the former defended his wife against the current backlash associated with nepotism, Holland herself is yet to speak on the subject.
