Starfield was released to a positively overwhelming response from fans and critics alike and broke multiple records, such as the record Steam 230k players while the game was in early access and surpassed one million concurrent users upon full launch. The game has been praised for its immersive storyline, space travel and exploration, the vast open world, and the freedom it offers gamers.
This year has been a historical one for the community with game releases like Starfield, Spider-Man 2, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and many more. Although Starfield is Bethesda’s biggest-ever launch and has seen immense popularity and success, the game almost dropped out of the top 50 games on the 2023 list on Metacritic.
Starfield Nearly Dropped Out of the Top 50 Games of 2023
As per Metacritic, Starfield‘s score has dropped to 83 after numerous reviews for its Xbox version. The game has a slightly better score for its PC version, which is currently 87. Starfield is now in 49th place among the highest-rated games of the year, almost slipping out of the top 50 games, while the PC version of the game is currently in 41st place.
The game on the top of the list is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, with a Metascore of 96. The reason behind the PC version of the game scoring more than the Xbox version is that high-end rigs run the game more smoothly than the Xbox Series X, which is allegedly the most powerful console from a technical perspective. The user score for the game on Metacritic is 5.6 and 6.6 on PC and Xbox, respectively.

Why is Starfield’s Score on Metacritic Diving?
One of the main reasons behind the scores dipping for Starfield, mainly the Xbox Series X version, is more reviews. As more and more players get access to a title, more reviews start pouring in, and ultimately the score of a game falls; however, this does not happen all the time. Other than that, review bombing is also a big reason, as there have been users giving the game zero or one out of ten, which is partly because the game released exclusively on Xbox.
With the game currently sitting in 49th place on Metacritic, the potential GOTY contender wouldn’t have expected to find itself so down the list. The game created hype that was never seen before in the gaming community, and although the game is not doing very well on Metacritic, its scores are pretty much okay.

While developers and publishers care about how the game is doing on Metacritic, the important thing is how the game does commercially. Starfield is being played by millions of players worldwide, and Xbox seems quite happy with the game’s performance.
