The much-awaited second trailer of Spider-Man: No Way Home is finally out! It features a lot of story reveal and has given us numerous Easter eggs to treat upon. Keeping ourselves composed for the next 30 days is going to be a very difficult task.
Peter Parker’s failed attempt at rewriting history brings about classic villains from other film franchises into the MCU. While there was no sight of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in the trailer, every possible character from their universe can be seen wreaking havoc in NYC. Here are all the big reveals from the second Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer and what they imply:
1. Spider-Man: Far From Home follow up
The trailer opens with visuals of Peter evading the cops with MJ after Mysterio broke the news of his identity. A similar scene also featured in the previously released teaser. This is a direct follow-up of Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s post-credit scene.
2. Peter’s black suit
While Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s teaser only gave us a slight glimpse of Peter’s black suit, the new trailer has given us a complete shot. The suit is printed with runes which suggests that it is magical in nature. Moreover, Peter is seen donning that suit only when he’s fighting Electro in the trailer. It’s likely that the suit has enhanced abilities to insulate electricity.
Later on in the trailer, we can also see that this black and gold suit allows Peter to do mystic art like Doctor Strange as well. It is also equipped with a small LCD on the chest where you can spot Ned and MJ.
3. Doctor Octopus
Alfred Molina’s creepily de-aged Otto Octavius is a major part of this trailer. He evidently doesn’t understand that he’s not in the Raimiverse anymore, and instead believes that he’s fighting Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. Regardless, Peter manages to take him prisoner which we see in the following snippets.
4. Otto Octavius has Stark tech?
One of the most unusual things that we noticed in the trailer was Doc Ock’s arms covered with what appears to be some kind of Stark tech. His tentacles getting covered with nanotech could upgrade him to additional capabilities that we would only be able to learn in the movie. Apparently, the original script that Sam Raimi wrote for Spider-Man 2 was going to refer to Doctor Octopus’ arms being Stark technology rather than his own design.
5. Captain America’s shield
The visuals of NYC in the trailer show us the Statue of Liberty under some sort of renovation to honor Captain America. Lady Liberty appears to be getting Captain America‘s mighty shield in front of her torch. This shield, however, falls down during a battle between Spidey and other villains in a following clip of the trailer.
6. J. Jonah Jameson
We get our first exclusive look at J.K Simmons who returns to the Spidey verse to play the iconic editor and publisher of the Daily Bugle, J. Jonah Jameson. He previously appeared in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and did a brief cameo in Far From Home‘s post-credit scene.
7. The Inevitable destiny
Doctor Strange tells Peter that all of the villains coming inside their universe “die fighting Spider-Man” because it’s their fate. This in fact is something that we have seen happening in previous Spider-Man movie franchises. Take the example of Green Goblin’s death in Spider-Man 1 and Doc Ock’s in Spider-Man 2.
8. The new Electro’s first appearance
Welcome back, Jamie Foxx! With a better appearance this time of course. MCU seems to have fixed The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘s poor design of Electro. This version of Electro seen in the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer is pretty comic accurate. He has a flow of electricity around his face which is reminiscent of the appearance that he had in the comics. The black and gold suit that Peter dons is in the trailer is equipped with mystic powers that allow Peter to fight electro without getting electrocuted.
9. Green Goblin
The glimpse of his pumpkin bomb in the teaser two months back gave us all jitters. That sinister laugh speaks volumes for the wrath that is about to unravel. Willem Dafoe is back in action as the Green Goblin from Sam Raimi’s Spider-verse. A backing audio in the trailer also has a psychological edge in Norman Osborn’s dialogue where he’s attempting to get into Peter’s head in order to mislead him. It was Green Goblin in the comics who persuaded Spider-Man’s multiple villains to unite against the web-slinger.
One very strange shot in the trailer saw another flying figure atop the Goblin Rider. Many have been speculating it to be Dane DeHaan as Green Goblin from The Amazing Spider-Man. However, the 4k version of the trailer shows that this is Willem Dafoe but suited up a little differently.
10. Sandman’s Battle Against Spider-Man
Unlike all the villains from the Raimi-verse that have shown up in the trailer, Sandman is one villain who did not die in a battle against Spider-Man. This version of Sandman could even be from a universe that we’ve never seen before. It is reasonable to assume this is Thomas Haden Church as there’s an uncanny resemblance of the sand monster with our previous Sandman.
11. Dr. Kurtis Connors aka Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man
We get the first visuals of The Lizard in a battle where Spider-Man takes on him alongside Electro and Sandman. The scene seems to be rather interesting as many fans are taking a dig at Sony’s clumsy edit. Apparently, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is seen heading towards the middle villain out of the three that he was up against. Now the big question that rises is — What were the other two villains up against since they seemed to be heading in a different direction?
At 0:55 seconds in the international version of the trailer, Lizard jumps at an invisible enemy and gets punched in the middle of the air. This scene was however altered soon after fans started pointing out. Did Sony just clumsily edit Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men out of these shots?
12. MJ’s death
Peter and MJ’s relationship in MCU has been reminiscent of Gwen and Peter’s plotline from The Amazing Spider-Man. In one of the snippets form the trailer, MJ can be seen falling to her death in a similar manner to the way Gwen Stacy did in the comic book story “The Night Gwen Stacy Died.” The visuals in the trailer here are mirrored to Gwen Stacy’s fall.
(Here me out though, how cool would it be be if the hand that we saw reaching out to Zendaya’s MJ turns out to be of Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man? In an alternate reality, Andrew Garfield’s Spidey swings in to save the love of his life!)
13. Spider-Man: No Way Home Threatens Multiversal Collapse
The Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer ends with visuals of Stephen Strange and Peter Parker watching the multiverse begin to collapse. The effect in the sky is reminiscent of a comic book event called an incursion where multiple universes collide resulting in massive destruction. Trying his best, Doctor Strange appears to be losing all hopes by seeing the things that were unraveling in front of him. In a previous clip form the trailer, Strange suggested that things could only be fixed if all villains are sent back to their respective timelines. Peter Parker is in a very unpleasant position where he must break his code to save the entire universe. With what we can decipher, it’s pretty much possible the repercussions of the events of this film would blend into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
