Sony’s relationship with Spider-Man has seen its fair share of highs and lows. From the critically acclaimed Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 to the mixed-bag of reviews that was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Sony Pictures never really found a firm footing with the superhero. But then, the studio struck solid gold with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. With jaw-dropping animation, memorable characters, stellar music tracks, and a gripping storyline, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is widely regarded as the best Spider-Man movie to date. With Miles Morales donning the suit in the wake of Peter Parker’s tragic death, Into the Spider-Verse made the idea of a multiverse lucrative enough for both Marvel Studios and the DC Extended Universe to promptly adapt it for their future storylines.

Released back in 2018, Into the Spider-Verse became the first non-Disney/Pixar movie to win an Academy Award since Rango (2011) at the 91st Academy Awards. With nearly 140 animators having worked on the movie, Into the Spider-Verse was widely acclaimed for its unique animation style. Having earned over $375 million against a budget of $90 million, Sony Pictures soon announced a sequel to the movie that is scheduled to release in 2022. But since then, no news has yet been revealed for the sequel, until this week.
NEWS
According to Murphy’s Multiverse, an insider source has reportedly revealed the major antagonist of Into the Spider-Verse 2. Though nothing has yet been officially confirmed, the site has reported that an obscure Spider-Man and Daredevil villain with ties to the Kingpin will feature as the movie’s villain. Yes, we are talking about the Spot.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Often considered to be one of the creepiest Spider-Man villains, the Spot has never been a quite popular character. Though the origins of the Spot’s power has never been revealed, it is quite similar to that of Cloak. Dr. Jonathan Ohnn, a scientist who worked for the Kingpin tried to artificially mimic the powers of Cloak. Though he partially succeeded in creating a massive black spot, the experiment caused a massive blackout through the city. Fearing that he might lose the chance, Dr. Ohnn jumped into the black spot to find himself in an entirely new dimension called the ‘Spotworld’. After emerging from the spot, his body had undergone a radical transformation with various inter-dimensional spots sticking to his body.

Using his mysterious powers, the Spot gained the ability to open inter-dimensional portals. These portals vary in size and aid him in ambushing his opponents and commit crimes. Considering the character’s close ties with the Kingpin, who was also an antagonist in Into the Spider-Verse, it makes sense to have the Spot as a villain for the sequel. Though nothing has yet been officially confirmed by Sony Pictures, the Spot can work wonders for the sequel, if proved to be true.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 is scheduled to release on October 7, 2022.
