“A post-credit scene at most”: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Fans Discuss the Most Unlikely Events to Occur

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 fans have been in a tizzy about Insomniac’s upcoming superhero video game sequel. After a couple of years of little-to-no info, we finally got a glimpse at gameplay not too far back, and shortly thereafter learned of the October 20, 2023 release date, just three days after Alan Wake II and on the same day as Super Mario Bros. Wonder. While fans are eager to learn more at Hall H of San Diego Comic-Con in just over a week, for now, they are busy with rampant speculation and theorizing.

A Reddit thread recently gained some headway as Spider-Man 2 fans discussed not what they expect to see, but instead what they expect not to see happen in the upcoming game. It opened up a lot of fun conversations about what direction the series could be headed in. The top comment from Weaseling1311 says “I don’t think goblin is gonna show up at all. A post credit scene at most.” Other fans chimed in that they believe Insomniac will save the Green Goblin for the third entry. Interestingly, should that turn out to be true, that would give us the same three antagonists as the Sam Raimi trilogy.

Spider-Man 2 Fans Speculate on Sequel’s Scenes

Some Spider-Man 2 fans speculate that Kraven will kill somebody close to Peter and/or Miles, but others remain unconvinced given how few loved ones each character has left.

Many Spider-Man 2 fans share the sentiment that Green Goblin will be saved for Spider-Man 3 rather than appear in this game. Given that the Green Goblin is generally one of Peter Parker’s greatest foes, it would make sense not to force him to share the spotlight with Venom, another one of the most popular Spidey villains.

Spider-Man is well known for having one of the most impressive rogues galleries in comics, and the debate about who Peter Parker’s true archnemesis is tends to be less obvious than other superheroes. The three biggest candidates tend to be Green Goblin, Doc Ock, and Venom, particularly the former two. As such, it makes sense to allow each of these three to be handled individually as villains rather than all at once.

Humorously, one Spider-Man 2 fan going by the username arthyeee boldly states “Batman won’t appear. Mark my words.” Well, I guess we’ll see! This sparked a thread of players joke theorizing about how various Batman characters will fit into the story. This tends to fit the theme of the majority of comments, which are largely done for the sake of humor.

One user by the name of RedSigil that they do not believe the game will adapt the story of Superior Spider-Man at all, feeling it will be redundant with a “mean Peter” already present thanks to the symbiote suit. Superior Spider-Man, in the comics, is a run wherein Doc Ock took over Peter Parker’s body and sought to prove himself superior. Some Spider-Man 2 fans believe that this will be adapted in some way thanks to the mechanical legs spotted in the first teaser for the game.

Some Spider-Man 2 fans speculate that the game will set up Carnage as a DLC villain, or potentially for Spider-Man 3. Could Carnage and Green Goblin come together for a Red Goblin adaptation in the next game?

Several users also remain unconvinced that Venom will wind up being a playable character. Though it would be far from the first time, with the classic Ultimate Spider-Man game, in particular, utilizing the villain as a secondary player character in wonderful fashion, it does seem unlikely it will happen here. While a great emphasis has been placed on the fact that there are two playable characters between Peter and Miles, nothing has stood out to suggest anything more. Even during the cover art and release date reveal, it was called out how the 2 in the title connect to there specifically being two playable characters.

Regardless of how many of these predictions are correct and how many are way off base, it won’t be long until Spider-Man 2 fans have plenty of new info to chew on, with the game receiving a panel at SDCC on July 20, 2023, exactly three months out from launch.
