South Park: Snow Day Is a Brand New 3D Game Based on the Popular Long Running Show

During its newest showcase, THQ Nordic announced South Park: Snow Day, the newest video game based on the popular long-running adult animated series. Unlike the two most recent South Park games, which were RPGs published by Ubisoft and featured a visual style indistinguishable from that of the show, the new game will have 3D graphics and feature co-op gameplay.

Throughout the trailer, we see glimpses of various different gameplay mechanics. A synopsis in the description of the trailer tells players to “join Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny, in three-dimensional glory, to celebrate the most magical day in any young child’s life – a snow day! Grab up to three friends and battle your way through the snow-piled streets of South Park on a quest to save the world and enjoy a day without school.”

Anything Can Happen on a Snow Day

South Park: SNOW DAY! looks a lot less like the show than the previous two games, but it is not the first 3D game based on the series.
South Park: SNOW DAY! looks a lot less like the show than the previous two games, but it is not the first 3D game based on the series.

While Snow Day certainly looks a lot different from the previous two games, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole, it is not the first 3D title based on the hit series. There have been several lesser-known gaming adaptations, but of particular note is the original Nintendo 64 South Park game, which featured 3D, first-person gameplay and throwing a lot of snowballs.

Originally, South Park: The Stick of Truth, developed by Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment, was intended to be published by THQ before its unfortunate shutdown in 2013. Eventually, the rights to the game were purchased by Ubisoft, who then went on to create the sequel, The Fractured But Whole. Now, however, Snow Day is being released by THQ Nordic, the phoenix that rose from the ashes of the original THQ.

The new game will be released in 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. No more exact dates have been announced quite yet. Original series creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker appear to still be heavily involved, including voicing their iconic characters, so it should still be faithful to the style of the hit television series.
