Keanu Reeves starrer John Wick: Chapter 4 is undoubtedly one of the most hotly debated topics these days. After years of waiting, the fourth installment of the blockbuster franchise was finally released on March 24.
The film gave the action series a new antagonist in the form of the menacing ‘Marquis’, played by Bill Skarsgård. He was undoubtedly a suitable foe for Reeves’ assassin, especially given the film’s unexpected ending. But we were not the only ones who thought Skarsgård’s accent in the movie was a little off.
With roles like Pennywise in the IT films, Kro in Eternals, and most recently the Marquis Vincent de Gramont in John Wick: Chapter 4, Skarsgård has proven that he is adept at playing villains.
His character, Marquis definitely stood out for his distinctive accent in addition to his sharp appearance, but that aspect of the character received criticism from fans, and now the director has responded to the flak.
Director Provides Fascinating Insight into Keanu Reeves’ John Wick 4
Director Chad Stahelski, who is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail and storytelling skills, has once again produced an incredible twist in his latest John Wick: Chapter 4.
In the fourth installment, Bill Skarsgård, known for his masterful interpretations of legendary figures like Pennywise the Clown (It), immersed himself in the challenging task of developing a recognizable villainous accent for Marquis.
Marquis was well-dressed and distinguished by his distinctive accent, but audiences criticized that aspect of the character, and now the director offered his insight.
In addition to discussing the possibility of John Wick: Chapter 5 on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Stahelski spent some time explaining what exactly was going on with Skarsgård’s accent. To quote him:
“He came to be, he goes, ‘I want to do a little bit like f**ked up French, like Cajun accent.’ I’m like, ‘I have no idea what that sounds like.’ Some people gave us sh*t a little bit because it’s not a good French accent. I’m like, ‘Guys, it’s not supposed to be French.’ Like, he wasn’t trying to be French, he’s a guy that speaks French.”
Moreover, in an interview with Total Film, the director, 54, revealed:
“The Marquis is a young man of unknown origin who has quickly climbed the ladder within the High Table doing god knows what. I always saw him as someone from the gutter who now savors the glittery suits he’s wearing.”
Chad Stahelski Discussed a Potential John Wick 5
There is a spoiler ahead if you are one of the rare people who has not watched John Wick: Chapter 4.
Keanu Reeves‘ character seemed to have passed away when Winston Scott (Ian McShane) and Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) went to John Wick’s grave, which was next to his late wife. Thus, it is obvious that John’s story is over now. Well, perhaps not.
According to Chad Stahelski, who appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves and he were in discussions about the possibility of making a further installment of the franchise, and the Canadian actor was very enthusiastic about the idea:
“Yeah, Keanu and I have talked. Keanu, if you ask him right now, ‘Would you do John Wick 5?’ He’d be, ‘F*ck yeah’. But then he’d look and go, ‘Well, what is it? I have no fu*king idea.’ That’s all. Believe me. It’s not like, ‘We’re going to figure it out today.’ Like, look man, we’re going to do our other stuff for a little bit, but if I was driving in the car or if I was walking the dog and an idea hit me, within 30 seconds I’d be on the phone to Keanu and we’d be riffing.”
With a global gross of over $432 million, John Wick: Chapter 4 has become the franchise’s most profitable film. Critics have given it high marks for its action scenes, cinematography, choreography, and performances.
The fifth movie is in the works, and a spin-off called Ballerina will be released on June 7, 2024.
