Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson’s chemistry in The Hunger Games captivated audiences worldwide. Their on-screen connection felt electric, seamlessly translating the characters’ complex relationship onto the big screen. Their dynamic performances and genuine camaraderie brought an added layer of authenticity, making their partnership one of the franchise’s highlights.
While Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson’s on-screen kiss in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire tugged at the heartstrings of numerous fans, the actor expressed that sharing a kiss with his on-screen counterpart lacked any romantic allure.
Why Was Kissing Jennifer Lawrence So Hard For The Actor
In a 2013 interview on Live! with Kelly and Michael, Josh Hutcherson, renowned for his role as Peeta in The Hunger Games series, candidly discussed the pivotal Catching Fire kiss with Jennifer Lawrence. While it delighted fervent supporters of Katniss and Peeta, Hutcherson unveiled that the experience was far from glamorous, humorously recounting the excessive presence of nasal mucus.
“It was very slobbery…It was right after Peeta had been knocked down, and it wasn’t looking too good for him,” the actor told the hosts. “So, she was upset, she was crying, and when she was crying, there was fluid here [points to an area on his face]…and then when we kissed, it was just fluid.”
Following Josh Hutcherson’s earlier interview, Jennifer Lawrence made an appearance on Ripa and Strahan’s show to address the rumors surrounding her “slobbery” on-screen kiss with her co-star.
“That can be explained,” she said. “[Josh’s character Peeta] was getting CPR before we kiss, so most of that drool belonged to Sam Claflin. Then I got involved, and I was crying because it was an emotional scene. So, I’m snotting.”
Jennifer Lawrence’s Kiss With Liam Hemsworth Was Also Awkward
Like Hutcherson’s experience, Liam Hemsworth also encountered underwhelming kissing scenes with Jennifer Lawrence. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2014, Hemsworth disclosed that Lawrence would intentionally consume malodorous foods prior to their on-screen kisses, creating an unconventional and less-than-ideal situation.
“Anytime I had to kiss [Jennifer Lawrence] was pretty uncomfortable,” he said. “When you look at it on the outside, it looks like a great picture. She’s one of my best friends, I love her, but if we had a kissing scene, she would make a point of eating garlic or tuna fish or something that was disgusting. Right before the scene, she’d be like, ‘Yeah, I ate tuna,’ or ‘I had garlic, and I didn’t brush my teeth.’ And I’d be like, ‘Fantastic; I can’t wait to get in there and taste it!'”
Liam Hemsworth portrayed Gale Hawthorne, a crucial character in The Hunger Games trilogy. As Katniss Everdeen’s best friend and hunting partner, Gale provided unwavering support and love. Hemsworth’s compelling performance captured Gale’s fierce determination, highlighting his loyalty, conflicted emotions, and his pivotal role in the rebellion against the Capitol.
The Hunger Games is available for streaming on Hulu.
