Seven years have passed since the release of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. However, the widely panned movie is still a topic of discussion among moviegoers, especially since the director has not held back in expressing his displeasure with the movie’s final cut. However, Ayer has lately revealed that studio co-CEO, James Gunn has promised him that his original cut of the film will one day get its time in the spotlight, giving DC fans some hope.
Ayer has maintained his position that his original vision for the 2016 film is significantly superior to what was ultimately shown to audiences. Now that the new co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, is trying to make room for a more cohesive DC universe, fans can finally feel optimistic about the franchise’s future.
Along with the fans, David Ayer is also ecstatic about the new path that DC has taken under Gunn’s direction.
David Ayer Praised James Gunn’s Chance to Redefine the DC Universe
David Ayer has been hinting at the possibility of seeing his version of 2016’s Suicide Squad from its initial release (and, to be honest, even before that). He is still keeping the possibility of his Suicide Squad director’s cut, known online as the ‘Ayer Cut’, alive.
At least initially, according to the director, DC Studios’ current CEO James Gunn is on board with the idea. Last month, Ayer posted on social media to let his followers know that he received word from the new head of DC Studios, that the Ayer Cut “would have its time to be shared.”
The director discussed his experience after Suicide Squad’s initial release on Twitter and raised the question of whether a new cut might be made. He tweeted:
He firmly went on to add in his post:
“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”
Ayer has long expressed his displeasure with the Suicide Squad cut that Warner Bros. released in August 2016.
David Ayer Criticized The Suicide Squad Cut
Will Smith and Margot Robbie were both featured in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (2016 film), which received harsh criticism upon release.
Ayer shared a moving letter on Twitter in 2021 in which he praised James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and provided details about his director’s cut of Suicide Squad.
The reviews for The Suicide Squad (2022) were favorable. Critics praised the performances, Gunn’s writing and directing, the action sequences, the soundtrack, and the visual style, and many thought it was a vast improvement over the previous film.
Meanwhile, Suicide Squad received unfavorable reviews from critics who criticized its plot, direction, editing, and action sequences, while also praising Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn.
Both Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad are streaming on Max.
