The DC Extended Universe has been a rollercoaster of epic battles, intricate storytelling, and iconic characters brought to life on the big screen. Spearheaded by Zack Snyder’s visionary direction, the DCEU introduced us to a reimagined world where superheroes and supervillains clashed in breathtaking spectacles. Yet, amidst the exhilarating adventures, there remains a lingering sense of curiosity about the characters who never got their chance to shine under Snyder’s lens.
As fans, we’ve pondered the what-ifs and yearned for the inclusion of certain beloved superheroes. In this article, we delve into the uncharted territories of the DCEU and spotlight 10 DC superheroes whose absence we keenly felt, envisioning the epic narratives they could have woven alongside the likes of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. While the DCEU carved its unique path, these unexplored heroes left us with the question: What if they had made it into Zack Snyder’s universe?
10. New Gods
The New Gods are a group of characters and concepts created by legendary comic book artist and writer Jack Kirby. These characters inhabit two opposing planets, New Genesis and Apokolips, and are embroiled in a cosmic struggle between High Father and Darkseid. Originally set to have a film of its own directed by Ava DuVernay and written by comic book writer Tom King, the film was canceled in April 2021. Introducing the New Gods into the SnyderVerse would have expanded the cosmic scope of the DCEU, delving into the intricate mythology of these otherworldly beings. The New Gods’ complex relationships, power struggles, and cosmic battles could have been brought to life in awe-inspiring ways.
9. Nightwing
Dick Grayson, the original Robin before striking out on his own. After outgrowing his role as Robin, he adopts the persona of Nightwing, a skilled acrobat, and detective with exceptional combat abilities and leadership skills. Nightwing’s solo adventures could explore more grounded storylines and showcase his unique rogues gallery. This could include encounters with villains like Deathstroke, the Court of Owls, and other threats specific to Gotham. Incorporating Nightwing would have provided a fresh perspective on the DCEU, focusing on the human side of heroism and the challenges faced by those without god-like powers and potentially leading to the creation of the Teen Titans.
8. Firestorm
A fusion of two individuals: Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein. When they combine, they become a being with control over nuclear energy and the ability to rearrange matter on a molecular level. Firestorm possesses immense power and the potential for both destructive and creative feats. The SnyderVerse often deals with catastrophic events and superhuman conflicts. Firestorm’s abilities, tied to nuclear energy, could lead to storylines involving the accidental release of immense energy, posing a significant threat to the world. Additionally, Given that Martin Stein is a scientist, his involvement could provide opportunities to explore the ethical implications of harnessing nuclear energy and the potential for unintended consequences.
7. Black Lightning
A prominent DC superhero with the power to control and generate electricity. Jefferson Pierce has a strong sense of justice and often uses his abilities to fight crime and protect his community. Jefferson is not only a superhero but also a dedicated educator, emphasizing the importance of education and positive role models. The SnyderVerse has been known to tackle complex themes. Black Lightning’s character could be used to address issues such as systemic racism, inequality, and the struggle for justice on a personal and societal level. If SnyderVerse wanted to explore the impact of metahumans on society, Black Lightning’s emergence as a metahuman and his subsequent decision to use his powers for good could contribute to the broader narrative.
6. John Constantine
A supernatural detective, occult expert, and sorcerer known for his cunning, wit, and morally ambiguous nature. Constantine navigates a world filled with demons, angels, and all things supernatural, often finding himself caught in dark and dangerous situations. While the Justice League battles cosmic foes, Constantine’s focus could be on street-level threats rooted in the mystical and supernatural. His involvement could bring a unique perspective to the DCEU’s conflicts. The SnyderVerse could use Constantine to delve into the darker corners of the DC Universe, including magical artifacts, ancient curses, and forbidden knowledge that could influence the course of events. John’s presence could also establish the potential for a Justice League Dark collaboration.
5. Hawkgirl
After Hawkman’s appearance in Black Adam, Hawkgirl feels like a bit of a missed opprotunity. Equipped with the powers of flight, superhuman strength, and enhanced senses, thanks to her connection to the ancient Egyptian hawk god Horus. Hawkgirl is often portrayed as a fierce warrior with a deep sense of duty and a complicated past. Hawkgirl’s ties to ancient Egyptian mythology could provide a mystical layer to the SnyderVerse. Her backstory, involving reincarnation and past lives, could add depth and complexity to her character. The SnyderVerse’s penchant for uncovering hidden truths and unraveling mysteries could align well with Hawkgirl’s history and the discovery of her past lives and connections, while also further delving into Hawkman as well.
4. Zatanna
As both a skilled magician and a superhero, Zatanna combines stage magic with actual mystical abilities to protect the world from supernatural threats. Zatanna’s expertise in magic could make her a go-to character for dealing with supernatural and mystical threats that go beyond the realm of traditional heroes. Zatanna’s magical abilities would provide a unique dynamic within the Justice League. Her interactions with other members, especially those with science-based powers, could create interesting contrasts. Additionally, a pairing of Zatanna and our previous entry of John Constantine would establish a relationship between the two and be the start of the Justice League Dark.
3. Robin
As seen in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, a destroyed Robin suit appears in the batcave. However, this was something never fully explored. Many have theorized the potential the suit to belong to Jason Todd, just as in the Death of the Family storyline or possibly Tim Drake like in Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. Regardless of the specific Robin, their partnership with Batman would showcase the mentor-student dynamic that has defined the Batman comics for decades. The presence of Robins would underscore Batman’s influence on the next generation of heroes. Their stories could explore themes of identity, legacy, and the challenges of living up to the Dark Knight’s standards.
2. Green Arrow
A skilled archer and marksman known for his social justice advocacy, his resourcefulness, and his mastery of various forms of combat. Green Arrow often uses his abilities to champion the underprivileged and challenge corruption. Green Arrow’s commitment to social justice and his outspoken advocacy for the marginalized could align with SnyderVerse’s exploration of deeper themes. His character could bring attention to issues like income inequality and political corruption. The SnyderVerse often leans into a darker and grittier tone. Green Arrow’s stories could explore this atmosphere, emphasizing moral dilemmas, personal sacrifices, and the cost of vigilantism. Exploring Green Arrow’s transformation from a wealthy playboy into a committed hero could offer a rich character arc and themes of personal growth.
1. Green Lantern
John Stewart did make a brief debut in a photo shot by Zack Snyder, portrayed by Wayne T. Carr. Additionally, we had an appearance by Yalan Gur in Zack Snyder’s Justice League during Darkseid’s first invasion of Earth. With another brief appearance of Kilowag in a minor shot. However, the opportunity to bring a Green Lantern into the SnyderVerse was severely missed. Green Lanterns’ stories could introduce new worlds, species, and conflicts beyond Earth. This expansion would have paved the way for diverse and visually captivating settings within the SnyderVerse. Establishing a Green Lantern as part of the Justice League would have also left the door open for more Lanterns to join the team.
