Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) was a surprise hit for Marvel Studios. The Studio stated that a sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in the works not long after the movie’s debut, but there haven’t been a lot of developments.
Although Shang-Chi 2 doesn’t yet have an official release date, its star, Simu Liu, recently hyped the film and discussed the key distinctions between making the first Shang-Chi and the sequel. Any official information, including the premiere date, has not yet been confirmed. Amidst this, Liu has got an update for the fans.
Shang-Chi Fans Get Disappointing Update From Simu Liu
Currently, it appears that any new developments about Shang-Chi 2 are being under tight wraps. A Shang-Chi sequel probably isn’t at the top of Marvel’s priority list because the studio has a number of other confirmed projects.
The Shang-Chi sequel was initially scheduled to premiere “after Avengers,” according to a recent post by Liu on the new social media site Threads. But the various release date adjustments have further delayed that. It’s unclear whether Liu is referring to Avengers: The Kang Dynasty from 2026 or Avengers: Secret Wars from 2027.
“was told it would follow Avengers but that keeps pushing back due to circumstances beyond my control 🙁 hope to have more concrete news to share soon,” Liu’s post reads.
Shang-Chi was a hit for Marvel despite being released when the box office was still having trouble as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. The movie made $432.2 million globally and $224.5 million domestically.
Simu Liu Hit Back at Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese
The Shang-Chi actor addressed Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese’s reiterated criticism of the Marvel Cinematic Universe on social media.
“If the only gatekeepers to movie stardom came from Tarantino and Scorsese, I would never have had the opportunity to lead a $400 million plus movie,” Simu Liu tweeted. “I am in awe of their filmmaking genius. They are transcendent auteurs. But they don’t get to point their nose at me or anyone.”
“No movie studio is or ever will be perfect,” he continued. “But I’m proud to work with one that has made sustained efforts to improve diversity onscreen by creating heroes that empower and inspire people of all communities everywhere.”
“I loved the ‘Golden Age’ too… but it was white as hell.”
Marvel movies have come under fire from director Quentin Tarantino, who claimed that the studio doesn’t make movie stars and that its movies “are the only things that seem to be made.”
“You have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is the star. I mean, I’m not the first person to say that. I think that’s been said a zillion times … but it’s like, you know, it’s these franchise characters that become a star.”
Fellow director Martin Scorsese has also been outspoken in his criticism of Marvel, referring to their films as “theme parks” and “not cinema,” which has sparked reactions from numerous actors and directors working for the studio.
“Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks,” he told Empire. “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
Liu is not the only MCU figure who has stood against the director’s remarks over the years. Both Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson have also shared their points of view too.
