Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) is a branch of the American superhero franchise produced in collaboration with Marvel Entertainment. The movies produced under Sony’s banner operate somewhat independently of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but with Marvel getting infinitely bigger by the hour, collaborations and associations between the two productions are becoming more common. The overlap started with the 2018 animated superhero action film created by Phil Lord, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The movie introduced one of the most important concepts that would become central to Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — the multiverse. The movie also made the far-fetched probability of having the three iconic Spider-Man actors together on-screen a reality. Now with the Marvel Universe stepping off the safety curb and expanding into limitless possibilities, Sony’s Spider-Verse creators too are reeling in for a sequel project.

Phil Lord is credited with masterpieces like 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, Solo: AStar Wars Story, America: A Motion Picture, and of course, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Along with Chris Miller, the two created the Academy-Award-winning masterpiece that serves as one of the most creative, visually dynamic, live-action movies to date in the Marvel superhero universe.
The two are coming together again for sequel projects that will pick up after the first Spider-Verse storyline. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse comes out on 2 June 2023. The movie will continue the journey of Miles Morales who will be seen embarking on an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team.

However, aside from the Spider-Verse sequel movie, the two creators are reportedly collaborating on a live-action series based in the Spider-Man universe. “Silk” is supposed to be about a Korean-American hero who gets bitten by the infamous spider that creates Spider-Man. Although no further reports on the series development have been on the news, the project does sound like another exceptional success story in the making.

When asked about the sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the pair replied, “The expectations for this film is that […] it has to be as groundbreaking and as special and as wonderful as, I think, the first one was. So we thought ‘Let’s not try and rush it. Let’s make it good. Let’s make it great. Let’s make every scene be its best self and not just a thing we’re doing to get it out on time.'”
Miller added, “Even though it’s a film about infinite Multiverses, it still has to obey the physical reality of this dimension.”
