For as far as the memory goes, Marilyn Monroe is most probably the actress that took beauty to a whole different level. Her captivating aura never failed to draw people in, in a fascinating manner and leave a long-lasting impression on them. The one-of-a-kind actress made numerous movies superhit just by starring in them, and her legendary personality is even remembered to date.
But while she was charming, warm, and a hardworking and committed actress, she was also cold when things didn’t go her way or when her demands were met. The same happened on the sets of one of her movies, when Monroe decided to be indifferent when the director of the movie banned her acting coach from the sets due to her constant nagging.
Marilyn Monroe Was Deeply Attached To Acting Coach Natasha Lytess
While the actress was widely loved on-screen, behind the bewitching acting of Marilyn Monroe was the special hand of her drama coach and friend, Natasha Lytess. Over time, The Misfits actress developed a close bond with her coach to the point where she couldn’t act without her.
In an excerpt from The Marilyn Encyclopedia, Lytess described her relationship with Monroe, saying:
“Her [Marilyn Monroe’s] habit of looking at me the second she finished a scene was to become a john in [the] projection room…The film of the daily rushes was filled with scenes of Marilyn, finishing her dialogue and immediately shading her eyes to find me, to see if she had done well.”
But her influence on the actress was seemingly crossing a limit, as described by How to Marry a Millionaire‘s co-star, Alexander D’Arcy. He said,
“Natasha was really advising her badly, justifying her own presence on the set by requiring take after take and simply feeding on Marilyn’s insecurity. ‘Well, that was alright, dear,’ she often said to Marilyn, ‘but maybe we should do it one more time.’”
However, this went on until one director banned Lytess from the sets of Marilyn Monroe’s film due to her constant nagging. As a result, the late star didn’t show up to the sets the next day, calling in for having an attack of bronchitis.
Eventually, after Monroe’s agent Charles Feldman told the studio point blank that the actress couldn’t do a single picture without her acting coach did the director call Natasha Lytess back and offered her a bonus package.
Natasha Lytess Was Jealous Of Every Man Marilyn Monroe Dated
Natasha Lytess’s influence, however, didn’t just end there. As it turns out, the acting coach was ‘always jealous’ of the men Marilyn Monroe saw, and that was the same case when The Misfits star began dating the baseball player, Joe DiMaggio in 1952. Explaining how she saw him as an enemy, the drama teacher said,
“I disliked him at once. He is a man with a closed, vapid look. Marilyn introduced us and said I was her coach, which made no impression on him. A week later I telephoned her and Joe answered: ‘I think if you want to talk to Miss Monroe’ – Miss Monroe! – ‘You’d better call her agent.’”
Although Monroe tried her best to bring peace between the duo, she was unable to do so as her teacher eventually ended up warning her how DiMaggio was ‘the punishment of God’ in the late actress’s life. Nevertheless, Natasha Lytess played a major role in Marilyn Monroe’s life as she was there for her through every up and down in her life.
Marilyn Monroe passed away aged thirty-six in August 1962 and Lystess passed away nine months later, in May 1963.
