Did Brendan Fraser Take A Subtle Dig At Tom Cruise?

During a 2019 panel at Fan Expo Canada, as reported by Comic Book, Brendan Fraser was asked about potential new films in The Mummy franchise, and whether he would be interested in taking part in them. Rather than answering directly, the actor chose to flip the question to the audience, asking whether they wanted more films from the franchise. Naturally, this led to a lot of cheering from the fans, to which the actor called out to Universal, the studio behind the series, telling them that the fans clearly wanted more from the film series.

He then went on to ignore the fact of the reboot that featured Tom Cruise. Even though the 2017 film featured the A-list actor, it was very poorly received by audiences, having a score of only 15% on Rotton Tomatoes. His refusal to even acknowledge Cruise’s film can be seen as a dig at it. Fraser chose to, instead, talk about his willingness to be part of a new version of these films, stating he would absolutely want to be in them.

Brendan Fraser then went on to talk about how difficult and challenging it was to make these films. He stated that the entire process can only be tolerable if the cast remembers to have fun and make it a fun process. He then added that if the new film has a similar approach he would be more than willing to take part in it. The actor then went on to talk about his co-star in the first two films, Rachel Weisz.

“Just gotta say, I know how hard it is to make that movie,” Fraser said. “I tried to do it three times, and the essential ingredient is fun. You gotta remember to have fun. So if there’s a fun way to approach it again, I’m all in.” He also praised his co-star in the first two movies. “I mean, come on. It’s Rachel Weisz, she’s lovely,” he commented. “She got stuck with all the exposition in that show. Which is good, that means all the talking. I was just the guy like, ‘Hurry up, let’s go, come on! That thing is gonna go bang!’ It worked out.”

Fraser went on to say that while his lines were a lot simpler with them simply asking the people on screen to run faster or hurry up due to some imminent danger, Weisz got stuck with the more complex lore explanation that required a lot more talking and comprehensive descriptions.
