Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion seems to have landed smack-dab in the middle of a sordid affair of mixed reviews. It’s an especially somber fate for the miniseries to have been subjected to since it seems to have garnered the lowest review score of any MCU Disney+ series. And as if the lukewarm reception wasn’t bad enough, the death of a key character seems to have widened the rift between fans and the spy thriller even more, with conspicuously divisive reactions on the same.
But perhaps there’s still time for redemption, if not in the show itself, then maybe through a classic multiversal revival in a new Marvel project?
Spoiler Alert! This article contains spoilers for Secret Invasion.
The Marvels to Resurrect Dead Secret Invasion Character?
Cobie Smulders has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade now with 2012’s The Avengers marking her first appearance as the systematic yet sassy S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Maria Hill. After portraying the beloved character for years, Smulders, 41, said a teary-eyed goodbye to it following her heart-wrenching demise in Secret Invasion.
In the latest MCU spy thriller, Maria suffers a gunshot wound at the hands of a Skrull who camouflaged as Nick Fury, her trusted ally and partner in crime depicted by Samuel L. Jackson. And while the injury was fatal enough to bring about her death, it looks like this might not be the last of Smulders that fans will be seeing after all.
Rumor has it that the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star might just be gearing up for an epic comeback in Nia DaCosta’s forthcoming movie, The Marvels. Although Smulders told Vanity Fair she was “pretty sure” Secret Invasion was her last Marvel gig, in a separate interview with THR, she also mentioned how “anything’s possible” in the multiverse of madness. When asked if the studio had left any doors open for her to make a potential comeback, the HIMYM actress said –
“That’s sort of for them to decide. I will always answer the call, but I have no idea what they have planned for future productions. But I guess anything’s possible in the multiverse.”
So, you never know.
MCU Fans React to the Possibility of Maria Hills’ Return
For the most part, fans always seem to cherish those characters whose lethality lies in their quiet demeanor, the calculated ones that, at the same time, are inexplicably charming, and Maria Hills is no exception. Not to mention, Smulders has spent quite a long time as a part of the superhero franchise, so the bond that the audience developed with her character only aggravated the latter’s reaction to her death in Secret Invasion.
So, now that the prospect of her return is on the cards, fans are delighted, to say the least, if not entirely puzzled.
While the actress herself seems to be tight-lipped at large about her probable restoration in the foreseeable future, let alone during this fall in The Marvels, it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing to witness either. Nick Fury faked his own death, Gamora made a reappearance in GoTG Vol. 3 despite Thanos pushing her off a cliff in 2019’s Endgame, and there are theories swirling all over the internet about how Wanda Maximoff isn’t dead either. So, Maria Hills’ return isn’t too far-fetched, but only time will tell whether it’s a real possibility.
The Marvels is set to premiere on November 10, 2023. Meanwhile, Secret Invasion can be streamed on Disney+.
