According to an AnimeJapan 2023 event (via Anime News Network), the Ghost In The Shell: SAC_2045 anime will be getting a movie project this year. A Ghost In The Shell movie was released in 2017 starring Scarlett Johansson, directed by Rupert Sanders which drew $169.8 million worldwide. The movie did not receive positive reviews due to the race-swapping issues. The new anime movie could be able to fix its legacy that was tainted by the Rupert Sanders directorial.

Ghost In The Shell: SAC_2045 Updates

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 anime officially revealed the title, teaser trailer, visual, and November 23 opening for the compilation film for the anime’s second season.

The first season debuted on Netflix worldwide in April 2020 with 12 episodes. The first series follows the episodic adventures of the special-ops security force Section 9, headed by Major Motoko Kusanagi (played by Scarlett Johansson in the 2017 movie), a tomboyish tough girl who happens to be 97 percent cyborg.

The compilation film of the first season opened in Japan in November 2021 for a limited two-week screening run in 20 theaters. Netflix began streaming the film in May 2022. The second season premiered worldwide on Netflix in May 2022. Directors Kenji Kamiyama and Shinji Aramaki directed the anime at studios Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts.

In the series, after an economic disaster known as the Simultaneous Global Default which destroyed the value of all forms of paper and electronic currency in the year 2045, Motoko, Batou, and Public Security Section 9 have contracted themselves with the group “GHOST.”

The Ghosts use their cybernetic enhancements and battle experience to earn a living while defusing hot spots across the globe. However, the emergence of “Post Humans” and a conspiracy uncovered by former Chief Aramaki forced Section 9 to reunite.

The Plot Summary of the Upcoming Film

With the upcoming movie, the battle against the post-humans continues. The post-humans and the people who consider themselves to be ‘N’ gather at Tokyo which is being rebuilt. From there, they start putting their plan into action. But it is unclear what being ‘N’ really means and how the American Empire will react to the post-human threat.

The film will play in 30 theaters nationwide in Japan for a limited three-week run. The trailer contains the second season’s opening theme song Secret Ceremony by Millennium Parade. 

The movie comes out on November 23, 2023.
