Sean Connery Forever Altered James Bond History With 1 Iconic Ad-Lib He Made Up On the Fly

The late Sean Connery played the iconic character of James Bond in seven Bond films including Dr. No (1962),  From Russia with Love (1963), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), and Diamonds Are Forever (1971). Connery made his final appearance as Bond in Never Say Never Again (1983).  Dr. No would be the most successful and critically acclaimed film of his tenure as Bond and would mark the beginning of what James Bond and his character would embody in the cinematic format. This included the character’s signature introductory catchphrase “Bond, James Bond”. Fans would be ecstatic to know that Connery himself played a big part in the origin of the phrase and making it a staple for future Bond films and for the character itself.

Sean Connery made his debut as James Bond in Dr. No in 1962. The film had a scene where James Bond introduces himself to the character of Sylvia Trench played by Eunice Gayson. Connery introduces himself saying the famous trademark introduction of the character “Bond, James Bond”. According to Express UK, this was not the line that was written in the script and Connery made an improvisation and made up the now iconic catchphrase of the character.

In the script, the line that was written was “I am James Bond”. However, Connery felt that the line lacked a certain punch and decided to improvise and change the lines to put more charisma and charm into it. He even improvised the bit where the character pauses after saying his last name and again revealing his full name. This small improvisation would create history as it became a significant signature introductory catchphrase for every Bond movie that came after it.
