Scarlett Johansson Praises Florence Pugh For Her Confidence

Johansson has been vocal about her sentiment of a sisterly bond with Pugh. The Avengers star said she has no younger sister, but Florence Pugh fills that void. “But with Florence, it feels to me like there’s some elements of big sister little sister.”

Florence Pugh’s rise to stardom solidified with her debut in the MCU with Black Widow. The film had a considerable amount of screen time for Pugh to showcase her talent, establishing her own distinctive presence in the movie. While Pugh has achieved great success, it’s easy to overlook the fact that she is still in her twenties.

“I wish I was as confident as she is when I was her age,” says Johansson. “She’s body confident and has a lot of self-respect. She reminded me – just by listening to her talk about relationships with friends, family or her partner – how important it is to have confidence in your beliefs and desires.”

Florence Pugh Had A Tough Time Taking On The MCU Role

The choice to take on the role of Yelena Belova in Black Widow wasn’t an easy one for the actress. Yelena, a Russian spy trained in the same program as Scarlett Johansson‘s character Natasha Romanoff, was a daunting character to play.

Nevertheless, the enormous global attention caught Pugh off guard, as she admits she wasn’t a huge Marvel fan before. The film’s cast was unveiled during the annual Comic-Con in San Diego. Pugh recalled, “It was like a warehouse full of people,” she says. “We went out and I’d never heard a roar like that.”

“I didn’t know whether people were going to hate me. We both stood there and I instantly had clammy, sweaty hands. Scarlett gave me her hand and we squeezed each other, and she also had clammy hands! And then I was like, ‘Oh, this never gets old. This is just as powerful [for you] and you’re their legend’.”
