Ryan Reynolds’s portrayal of Deadpool quickly became a fan favorite, thanks to his humor and sharp wit. Reynolds’ ability to quickly transition between humor and action, combined with the character’s bada** attitude, made the Deadpool movies a huge success.
It’s hard to imagine any other actor playing the iconic role, but initially, there was another action star who was shortlisted for the role, Jensen Ackles. Ackles gained worldwide recognition for his portrayal of Dean Winchester in the drama series Supernatural. In the end, we couldn’t see Ackles’ version of Deadpool but we got to see him playing another iconic character as the modern audience also knows him as Ben/Soldier Boy from Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys.

Ryan Reynolds was not the first choice for the role of Deadpool
Many will agree that actor Ryan Reynolds did a great job at portraying the iconic Marvel character, Deadpool, however, actor Jensen Ackles was first approached for the role. In November 2022, Ackles appeared at SPN PHX J2 and revealed that he was busy with other projects so, he had to turn it down,
“There was definitely a movie that I was very much in talks about… I wasn’t available, so the train just kind of stopped there. But, had I been available, I would’ve had to, you know, jump through the studio hoops and jump through the, you know, producer hoops and stuff. But I had a really good shot, and it’s a movie that I really, really like. [He was then asked about the movie] Deadpool.”
Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal was good, but it would’ve been exciting to see Ackles’ version of it. Thankfully, we later got to see Ackles playing another iconic antihero, Soldier Boy, in Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys.
Jensen Ackles’ ex-girlfriend was in the movie
Ackles further revealed that he has no regrets about it and loved how the movie turned out without him. He also revealed that his ex-girlfriend was in the movie,
“It was probably a good thing because my ex-girlfriend was on there and so that probably would have been awkward, so it probably worked out for the best. I think that the whole cast was amazing. I probably would’ve messed that up for a lot of people had I been a part of it, so probably best I didn’t. But that would’ve been cool.”
Even though he didn’t reveal that name, fans have concluded that he was allegedly talking about Morena Baccarin, who played Vanessa Carlysle, Wade Wilson’s fiancée, in Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018). In 2024, fans will get the third installment in the Deadpool franchise and this time, another fan-favorite character will return, Wolverine.
