Blue Beetle has come as a saving grace for DC amidst the onslaught of critically panned movies released this year. While the box office is still trying to catch up with the positive word-of-mouth, Blue Beetle is all set to become a promising part of James Gunn’s DCU. The story explores the superhero journey of Xolo Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes, who comes in possession of an alien Scarab that gives him powers after using his body as a host.
The movie provides very little info about the future of DCU. However, the director of the film Ángel Manuel Soto has confirmed fan suspicions about Green Lantern making a cameo appearance in the film.
Green Lantern Fights The Scarab In Blue Beetle Opening Sequence
Soto appeared in a Q&A with Collider to discuss some spoiler-filled contents of Blue Beetle. The director addressed several easter eggs that eagle-eyed fans found in the movie. One such scene that caught their attention was a green light hitting the Scarab in the opening sequence of the movie. Fans speculated that this could be a Green Lantern or a Green Ring reference in the movie. Soto has confirmed these speculations:
“There’s more. At the beginning of the title sequence, for those of you guys that follow the Blue Beetle comics, there’s a green light that hits this character, and that’s a Green Lantern. If you didn’t catch it, watch it again. Also, on the bug layer, and you see it also at the end, there’s a stack of Oreos, and who likes to eat Oreos?”
However, fans continue to speculate regarding who the Green Lantern in the movie is. According to DC Comics, the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force, assigns one Green Lantern per sector of the Universe, each equipped with a green ring that gives them superpowers.
Was That Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern That Appeared In Blue Beetle?
The popular choice among fans for Blue Beetle’s Green Lantern was Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan. However, considering how the 2011 movie bombed at the box office and how Reynolds bashed the movie in an end credits scene of Deadpool, the possibility of The Adam Project actor’s return is almost nonexistent. Apart from Hal Jordan, other Green Lanterns like John Stewart and Guy Gardner were also suggested.
The fans’ excitement certainly opened up the possibility but there was no confirmation about him actually appearing in the movie.
The first appearance of a Green Lantern in the DC Universe was Alan Scott in the 2008 DC Animated movie Justice League: The New Frontier. In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the Green Lantern Yalan Gur made an appearance. While John Stewart was also set to appear in this movie, his scenes were eventually cut from the movie.
The most plausible choice for the Green Lantern that appeared in Blue Beetle could be Guy Gardner. It is confirmed that Guy Gardner will make an appearance in James Gunn’s Superman Legacy. The role will be played by Nathan Fillion, who earlier appeared in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Blue Beetle is currently playing in theatres.
