Rumor: Nintendo’s Next Console Will Be Called Nintendo Switch Wonder

Nintendo’s next console, following the Nintendo Switch, is rumored to drop later this year on October 20, the same day Super Mario Bros. Wonder releases. It will have 4K support, two different launch bundles, and new features to differentiate it from the Nintendo Switch.

According to this 4chan user, Nintendo’s next console is called the Nintendo Switch Wonder. Super Mario Bros. Wonder plays a huge component into this story as the 4chan user claims it will be Nintendo’s first native 4K game and will be bundled into the $500 console with 256GB of storage. There will also be a $400 version with 64GB of storage and no Super Mario Bros. Wonder game.

How Did NSW Turn Into Nintendo Switch Wonder?

Super Mario Bros. Wonder, rumored to launch alongside a new 4K console called Nintendo Switch Wonder on October 20, 2023

Nintendo filed for the “NSW” trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) back in 2022. The EUIPO manages all the trademarks in the EU. Nintendo filed for “NSW” to the EUIPO on June 29, 2022 and it was registered a few months later on October 21.

For years, “NSW” has been a popular acronym for “Nintendo Switch”. Typing “nsw games” into Google will produce results featuring Nintendo Switch games. When the trademark was filed, no one suspected much other than “NSW” standing for “Nintendo Switch”.

Now that Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been officially announced thanks to the Nintendo Direct from last month, it might become more clear what this trademark actually means. The 4chan post is filled with users hardly believing the details given. We’re about three months away from October 20 and no official word from Nintendo on their next console, it’s easy to side with the comments of this 4chan post. And the Nintendo Direct announced games launching in 2024 such as an enhanced version of Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon

When the first Nintendo Switch reveal happened, it was coincidentally October 20, 2016. The Nintendo Switch would then launch about five months later on March 3, 2017, giving fans enough time to pre-order the console and their copy of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Other details the 4chan post contains such as downloading the 4K versions of Nintendo Switch game carts onto the Nintendo Switch Wonder, a new Pro Controller with a touch screen on it, hall effect thumbsticks, and cameras on the front and back on the 900p OLED touch screen.

The claims from this post seem all too convenient to be revealed after Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s announcement. In addition, the Nintendo Switch Wonder console details seem a bit far out there. The Pro Controller is already $69.99, so how much will this new one cost that includes a small touch screen? While hall effect thumbsticks would fix the well known joy-con drift, it’s an issue Nintendo is dealing with quietly. And how will digital games from the Nintendo Switch transfer to the Nintendo Switch Wonder for 4K support? Not enough information is given here to fully sell these rumors on the Nintendo Switch Wonder, especially when looking at the comments below the 4chan post

Furthermore, the 4chan post provides an image of Mario wearing a suit and the title “Nintendo files trademark on ‘NSW’ abbreviation”. It’s the exact title and image from a gaming news site called Shacknews. Same headline and image used to compliment the 4chan post. Only time will tell if this “NSW” trademark from Nintendo has any significant meaning beside it being more for “Nintendo Switch”. What do you think about these new rumors on Nintendo’s next console? Is there some truth to the 4chan post? Or is it all smoke and mirrors? Let us know in the comments!
