It appears Roblox is the most recent video game platform to be infected by artificial intelligence. The online game creation system, which is developed and published by Roblox Corporation, recently announced that it has been testing a generative A.I. tool to bring to gamers.
This is quite significant because the game has seen a plethora of users since its inception. In fact, the second quarter of 2023 marked 65.5 million active Roblox gamers, playing on daily basis. It has also tracked over 200 million active users a month, as of April 2021.
The reason A.I. in Roblox is important is because the technology has become so controversial in the last several months. The entertainment industry has been hit hard by threats of A.I. generated content, which was part of the motivation for the SAG-AFTRA strike against various studios. As another potential strike on the video game industry appears to loom, any use of A.I. must be brought in the question.
Prior to the announcement that Roblox will be using A.I., Activision announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will have such technology. The developer behind the highly popular FPS franchise intends to use its system as a method of monitoring toxic gaming behavior.
The moderator will pick up on certain words and phrases it deems inappropriate, and will aid in the removal of violating users. This has made many gamers wonder how far A.I. will be willing to go when it comes to censorship.
How Roblox Intends to Use Artifical Intelligence As Part of the Game
The way A.I. will be incorporated into Roblox is far less sinister than some might suspect. It is not designed to take away jobs or keep a close eye on gamers, but instead will be used for building. The system that is being tested on would allow players to create avatars, buildings, weapons, clothing, etc. by prompting the generator with what they want.
This new way of building in Roblox would not only be easier for players, it would potentially cut down on the amount of complex code programmers would have to create. This could be incredibly useful for the developers, who typically work on aspects of the game individually or in small groups.

Nevertheless, one has to think even something as simple as an artificial intelligence building tool in Roblox, could lead to adverse implications in the gaming industry. As of now, it appears the technology is not advanced enough to write complex code. However, when it does reach this level of evolution, the question becomes whether those who work in gaming will suffer the consequences.
Given the fact that Roblox is so popular among millions of users, there is no telling how advanced the A.I. tool could become with time. It is also important to realize that right now the gaming industry has been hit hard. BioWare recently fired 50 of its employees and Mimimi Games announced it was finished making new titles. The stakes feel high, and there is not telling what A.I. might do to the future of video games.
