It was a great day for cinema when Christopher Nolan came out with yet another one of his intelligent masterpieces, Oppenheimer. Having been released on the same day as Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the films gave each other tough competition, both critically and at the box office.
Now, Oppenheimer and Barbie are both bringing in more and more numbers at the box office, the latter more than the former. After a little over a month since Oppenheimer’s release, the film has managed to find its place in the top four highest-grossing R-rated films of all time. But will it be able to take over the top spot?
Oppenheimer Is Finding Its Way to the Top
Christopher Nolan’s magic resulted in Oppenheimer receiving a solid 93% Rotten Tomatoes score with the critics having nothing but praise for the story, the actors, the director, the visuals, and the final product. It stars Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Rami Malek, and more. Both the critics and the audience agree that the casting could not have been more perfect!
All of this and more combined, Oppenheimer has managed to make $777 million at the worldwide box office. Talking about R-rated films, Nolan’s masterpiece has defeated Hugh Jackman’s Logan ($619M), The Matrix Reloaded ($741M), and more to make itself comfortable as the fourth highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
And looking at the way things are going for the film in the International market, it will not be long before Oppenheimer touches the $800 million mark. If this happens, which it seems like it will, the film will break the records of both Deadpool ($783M) and Deadpool 2 ($786M) to become the second highest-grossing R-rated film ever.
The only thing left for it to do is defeat Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker which sits at the top with $1.07 billion to its name. Does it have what it takes to become number one?
Can Oppenheimer Defeat Joker?
Right now, the film is known to have made $777 million at the worldwide box office. And while the number is extremely impressive, it still has to cover a bit of a way before it can reach the billion-dollar mark. It needs to make $1 billion at the worldwide box office and then some more if it wants to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in history. The question is, can it?
Also, let’s not forget that the film has not been released in Japan yet since it involves topics that are sensitive to the country. A spokesperson from the studio told Variety, “Plans have not been finalized in all markets.” As of now, Japan has not banned Nolan’s film from releasing but do not be shocked if that’s what the case becomes in some time.
According to a recent report by Deadline, Oppenheimer is still doing wonders at the international box office. Just this weekend the film brought in $29.1 million, becoming the leader in 82 markets. If this keeps up, Oppenheimer can slowly but surely become a part of the billion-dollar club and even win the crown for the biggest R-rated film ever.
