The Red Dead Redemption (RDR) franchise has brought out some of the best games from Rockstar Games. The Western-themed, open-world series requires absolutely no introduction to gamers everywhere. This series has only had two main titles but the storyline in both has moved players to tears, got them playing again, and has pulled in more new players over the years. The Wild West setting still has players joining others and riding horses to the sunset, living their fantasies of cowboy life in an alternate reality.
While there’s no confirmed news on the next title in the series, the franchise has had some amazing characters who can take on the helm of being the protagonist for the third game in the series. We take a look at the seven best characters who can take on the role.
7. Dutch Van Der Linde From Red Dead Redemption 2
Dutch Van der Linde from Red Dead Redemption 2 could be perfect to continue his story in the next title if Rockstar Games decided to go back in time once again. This could actually lead to many other candidates being perfect to be the protagonist as well, but none more than the leader of his gang, Van der Linde. A look back at his time from before the prequel could be a way to go if Rockstar Games chose to take the path.
6. Hosea Matthews
Van der Linde’s best friend in the series, Hosea Mathews is another strong candidate to consider as leading the line for Red Dead Redemption 3. Mathews was a wise and experienced character in the prequel, who was more of a mentor and a father figure not just to Dutch but to his gang members as well.
A prequel to Red Dead Redemption 2, could focus on the bond between Dutch and Mathews leading to the storyline that’s a lot more interesting. We saw very little of Mathews in RDR 2, so a standalone game about his past could just be the way to go, again, only if Rockstar Games decided on another prequel.
5. Jack Marston
John and Abigail’s son from the first Red Dead Redemption game, Jack Marston, could also take on the helm of heading the next title as the protagonist. Marston is seen as a determined, headstrong man who just wants to live up to his father’s legacy, with vengeance in his heart against everyone who wronged his family. If Marston could just get his own prequel, where he gets to tell his story and win over the hearts of gamers who thought of him as an annoying character.

4. Landon Ricketts
A retired gunslinger, and a legend, if Landon Ricketts could get to tell the gamers about his best years the third game would be the perfect choice to base it on him. Being an expert shooter, gamers could get to live the times when he struck fear in the hearts of his enemies. Gamers also wouldn’t mind witnessing Ricketts’ journey starting from the absolute beginning when he was a nobody and ending the game with him being a legend, again if only Rockstar Games would decide on another prequel.
3. Charles Smith
Native American, Charles Smith is the next best candidate who could take the gamers on a journey to experience the rough times when injustice was prevalent in the Wild West. Smith may not be the most honorable man in the franchise, but that could just about be used to craft a story around him and the reasons why he is who he is.
2. Josiah Trelawny
A cunning individual, Josiah Trelawny is one of the few characters to be left alive after being involved with the gang of Van der Linde. Trelawny’s a self-sufficient, charming gentleman in the franchise, with a lot of unexplained aspects surrounding him, which makes him one of the best characters to lead the next title. Gamers could explore his past, get to know his curious back story, and live a more gentleman’s life in the Wild West for once.
1. Bonnie MacFarlane
If ever Rockstar Games wanted to lead the line with a lady, Bonnie MacFarlane would be quite the choice. MacFarlane is a rancher with diminutive combat experience, which makes her an odd choice but taking on her character where gamers get to witness the beginning of her gunslinging life, could just be the blank slate that Rockstar Games needs right now, for a brand new story to be told in the next Red Dead Redemption entry.
The original Red Dead Redemption was recently resurrected in a new platform with Switch getting a port on the 17th of August. Not a bad time for newcomers to the franchise to explore the Wild West for the first time on a modern console.
