Gone are the RGB-laden, bold, and eye-catching hardware designs, replaced by something that seems to represent a stark contrast to the flashy philosophy of old.
The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro instead focuses on performance, packing the headset with high-end hardware, while leaving it completely devoid of unnecessary adornments like RGB lighting and haptics. This prioritization of function over form in almost every aspect allows the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro to emerge as the most capable headset in Razer’s already impressive gaming headset lineup.

Everything about the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro screams functionality over flashiness, from its inbuilt gaming-focused EQ sound profiles, to its new high-quality microphone, and lightweight yet durable design. The addition of a Bluetooth connectivity also adds an extra aspect of convenience, making the headset compatible with a wide range of devices, from the PlayStation 5 to smartphones.
Before proceeding, I feel that it is important to clarify the possible confusion surrounding the name of this product. If browsing on Razer’s website, you may come across another Razer headset called the BlackShark V2 Pro. That is actually the previous model that released back in 2020. The one being reviewed here is the BlackShark V2 Pro (2023).

This updated version represents an impressive improvement over its predecessor. While the visual changes may be subtle, the 2023 version of the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro introduces multiple useful quality-of-life improvements. The outdated microUSB charging port found on the initial model has been replaced with the more modern USB-C interface. Additionally, the spindly stainless steel sliders connecting the ear cups to the headband have been reinforced, providing increased durability.
On the left ear cup, the BlackShark V2 Pro features a mute microphone button and a volume knob. The inclusion of the volume dial is especially welcome since many top-priced headsets still lack this convenience, forcing users to rely on in-game volume sliders. The right ear cup houses a button that allows easy switching between audio profiles, including EQ setups for gaming, music, and movies.
There are five EQ presets optimized for popular multiplayer games including Apex Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty, CS:GO, and Valorant. While this feature is handy for users in a hurry to boot up their favourite game, those desiring more precise EQ adjustments can utilize the accompanying Razer Synapse app.
The first time that I placed the headset on my head, I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort of the BlackShark V2 Pro’s ear cups. While the foam cups are covered in cloth rather than leather, reminiscent of more affordable designs like the Logitech G435, they provide exceptional comfort and breathability, ideal for intense online gaming sessions.

Additionally, as someone who wears glasses, I am happy to report that the BlackShark V2 Pro doesn’t squeeze the legs of my glasses into the sides of my head in the way that a lot of other headsets do. Also, the removable mic boom consistently stayed securely in place and out of my way during gameplay.
Razer claims that the BlackShark V2 Pro can last up to 70 hours when connected via the 2.4GHz receiver and up to 90 hours when connected via Bluetooth. Through testing, I found that these claims were substantiated, as the headset consumed less than half of its battery capacity over a week of use with the USB dongle. This exceptional battery life allows for extended usage without the need for frequent recharging. When it does come time to recharge, the headset quickly replenishes its power.
One standout feature of the v2023 version of the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro headset is its improved microphone. The microphone represents a significant step up from the previous model and even outperforms many other high-end headsets in its price range. Equipped with a 9.9mm condenser mic running at a 32kHz sampling rate, it delivers deep, warm, and noise-free audio. The very first time I entered a chat lobby using this mic, every one of my friends commented on how clear I sounded.
Although this microphone upgrade may seem unnecessary for casual users, it would greatly benefit streamers and content creators seeking broadcast-worthy microphone quality. Additionally, the stiffer arm attaching the microphone to the left ear cup prevents it from gradually drifting away from the user’s mouth, addressing a common concern reported by users of the previous BlackShark V2 Pro model.

The Razer BlackShark V2 Pro utilizes the same Razer Triforce drivers as its predecessors, delivering exceptional sound performance. The mid-range frequencies are captivating, delivering the immersive audio experience desired for gaming. Surprisingly, the closed-back ear cups provide a wider soundstage than some may expect. While some bass impact may be sacrificed, it feels like a minor trade-off considering that the headset primarily focuses on gaming rather than functioning as a dedicated music headset.
The 2023 Razer BlackShark V2 Pro represents a significant improvement over its predecessors in all of the right ways. With its exceptional microphone quality, inbuilt EQ profiles tailored for specific games, additional comfort padding, and USB-C port, it stands as a well-rounded package. If you are in the market for a high-end gaming headset, the 2023 Razer BlackShark V2 Pro should be at the top of your list. While it may not come at a budget-friendly price, its impressive performance justifies the investment for those seeking a premium touch to their gaming audio experience.
