Rachel McAdams Only Agreed For A Cameo

Following the remarkable success of the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes, Warner Bros. wasted no time in greenlighting a sequel. This decision led to director Guy Ritchie stepping away from his planned adaptation of Lobo, and Robert Downey Jr. departing from Cowboys & Aliens, leaving the future of their involvement uncertain. 

As for Rachel McAdams, her participation in the sequel remained unclear at that point in time. McAdams said, “If I do, it won’t be a very big thing. It’s not a lead part.

In a later confirmation to Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros. revealed that Rachel McAdams would indeed have a role in the Sherlock Holmes sequel, although it would be a cameo appearance. Noomi Rapace ultimately portrayed the coveted female lead role in the film.

According to Joel Silver, the producer of the film, it was always their intention to feature a different type of female character for each installment of the Sherlock Holmes series, drawing inspiration from the iconic Bond girls known for their diverse roles in the James Bond films.

Rachel McAdams Has A Long List Of Turned Down Projects

Like many actors, McAdams has had to make difficult choices when it comes to film projects. There have been instances where she turned down roles that went on to achieve great success. For example, she declined the opportunity to star in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), a role that ultimately went to Anne Hathaway. While the film garnered widespread acclaim and established Hathaway as a leading actress, McAdams’ decision allowed her to pursue other projects that aligned more closely with her artistic vision.

Similarly, McAdams reportedly turned down the role of Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Iron Man (2008), which eventually went to Gwyneth Paltrow. While the role could have provided McAdams with further visibility and commercial success, her decision allowed her to explore other avenues and take on projects that resonated with her personal and creative interests.
