It is lovely to witness the strong bond that exists between Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz. According to reports, the stars had a friendship long before they collaborated on the 2000 cult classic, Charlie’s Angels.
Barrymore, who became famous as a young actress due to her breakthrough performance in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, is in a good place right now. She has won a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and has been nominated for Emmy Awards and a British Academy Film Award among other accolades.
What more? She also has wonderful friends. In fact, it was those helpful friends, like Cameron Diaz, who supported her during her battle with addiction and when things were not so rosy for Barrymore.
The two frequently talk about how important their friendship has been to them. Barrymore, Diaz, and Lucy Liu played the three Los Angeles-based detectives in Charlie’s Angels.
The movie was a huge financial hit, which improved Barrymore’s standing as one of the movie’s producers within her production company.
Cameron Diaz’s Charlie’s Angels co-star’s Tragic Life Story
The fact that Drew Barrymore quickly joined Hollywood while under her mother’s supervision is concerning.
In her first shocking memoir, 1990’s Little Girl Lost, the actress revealed that she first encountered alcohol at a birthday party when she was just nine years old and started “pouring liquor over her ice cream” (as paraphrased by E! News) when she was just seven years old.
Barrymore started using drugs when most girls her age were playing with Barbie dolls and had not even started their periods. PEOPLE reported that when she started weed for the first time at the age of ten and a half, she had already been a smoker of cigarettes for about a year.
The actress, now 48, told PEOPLE back in 1989:
“Eventually [pot] got boring, and my addict mind told me, ‘Well, if smoking pot is cute, it’ll also be cute to get the heavier stuff like cocaine.”
Barrymore further added:
“It was gradual. What I did kept getting worse and worse, and I didn’t care what anybody else thought.”
She also had a cocaine habit when he was 12 years old. According to PEOPLE, by the time she was 13, she had “undergone extensive drug rehabilitation treatment.”
Cameron Diaz Found Drew Barrymore’s Struggle With Alcohol ‘Difficult To Watch’
Drew Barrymore has Cameron Diaz‘s back no matter what, especially in her darkest hours. The former supported her friend when things were not going well and she was struggling with her addiction.
In a profile on Barrymore for The Los Angeles Times, Diaz talked about her longtime friend’s past struggles with alcohol abuse and how she supported her through overcoming them.
Barrymore has previously discussed how, after becoming famous as a child actor, she experienced problems with drinking at age 11, cocaine addiction at age 12, and being admitted to rehab for attempting suicide at age 13. She worked hard to overcome her addiction over the years, but in 2016, after her third marriage ended, she relapsed.
According to Diaz, those times were “difficult to watch”.
“But I knew that if we all stuck with her and gave her the support she needed, she would find her way,” Diaz told the outlet. “I have absolute faith in her. You can’t even comprehend how hard it was to be her as a child, and then she shot out the other end with the ability to save herself.”
Since the 1990s, Barrymore and Diaz, who co-starred in the 2000 cult classic Charlie’s Angels, have been close friends.
Barrymore currently serves as the host of The Drew Barrymore Show, on which she often talks about her past struggles with addiction.
