From casual racism to overblown set pieces, the James Bond franchise is known to cause both laughter and utter disdain. Whilst the franchise has given cinema’s most unbelievable moments, it has also catapulted actors to their fame. Rosamund Pike is one among such stars who got their breakthrough roles as a bond girl. However, despite enjoying the experience, she hated the aftermath of her role.
Starting out her career during the early 2000s, Rosamund Pike mentioned receiving very little respect, following her 2002 James Bond film, Die Another Day. Feeling the pressure of living up to the image of a Bond girl, Pike suffered emotionally and even mentioned canceling interviews after starring in the Pierce Brosnan film.
Rosamund Pike Felt The Pressure Of Being A Bond Girl
Irrespective of the absurdities, violence, and ridiculous moments, the James Bond franchise appears as one of the most followed film series by the audience. Featuring different stars as the pivotal character, over the years, the Bond film series gained recognition and served with unbelievable moments in the history of cinema.
Rosamund Pike one of the star cast of the franchise appearing in the 2002 installment Die Another Day, shared her experience as a Bond girl. Admitting that she wasn’t sure what she was getting into, Pike mentioned feeling the pressure of living up to the image of a Bond girl. “I was the most naïve candidate at the time that I did [Die Another Day]” the actress reflected during an interview in 2014.
“I had no agenda. I didn’t know what I was doing…I never got an idea of what a Bond girl should be, because I don’t think there is such a thing” Rosamund Pike stated.
Feeling enormous pressure to maintain her film image, Pike recalled the aftermath of her appearance in Die Another Day. The actress mentioned having the sinking feeling of not being able to be her real self in the public eye anymore. “I was really confused… I focused on the need to look like [a Bond girl], and to live up to this image that had been foisted on me.” Pike shared.
Feeling overwhelmed by her experience following her appearance in Die Another Day, Rosamund Pike mentioned canceling interviews.
Rosamund Pike Felt Disrespected After Die Another Day
While the James Bond movies are undoubtedly known for their s*xism, Rosamund Pike seemingly educated her audience some more about the same. Looking back at her 2002 Bond movie, the actress explained how she feels the franchise is “ripe for an incredible amount of s*xism”. Adding how she felt extremely uncomfortable, Pike addressed her time on set.
Previously acknowledging how she took some time to shake off the Bond girl image, Rosamund Pike stated the movie was both, a blessing and a curse. Recalling her on-set experience, the actress stated, “You hang out with them, and you’re the weaker vessel – it’s the ultimate peer pressure”. She further added the unpleasant aura and the sheer disrespect she felt following her 2002 movie.
“I think, post-Bond, people forgot that I’m very girly. People compartmentalize you much more than I like to think they do.” Rosamund Pike stated.
Experiencing an overwhelming feeling, Pike recalled feeling the urge to distance herself and even leave certain aspects of Hollywood. “Having done the Bond film and been really overexposed, I was known by everybody but respected by none” the actress shared. She further added, “I thought I wouldn’t do any interviews — bow out of the whole system — until I had something to talk about.”
However, she soon recovered from the sinking feeling and embraced being in the spotlight all over again. Getting a newfound momentum after her breakthrough role, Rosamund Pike capitalized on her fame and appeared in renowned movies like Gone Girl.
