After the release of the One Piece live action, the series has got a new profound refresh. The live action has gathered all the fans together and has managed to earned their respect which many other live action series have failed to do. Oda’s masterpiece was one of the biggest selling manga in the history and it’s live action has been able to stand up to the name of the series. Be it the VFX or the characters, the adaptation is praise worthy and is being loved by all One Piece fans.

Zoro’s Position in One Piece Manga and Anime

The first mate is the captain’s most trusted companion and right hand man. The One Piece live-action series made a significant move by formally identifying Zoro as the Straw Hat Pirates’ first mate, but this is not the case in the manga or anime series. In the manga and anime, he is never expressly mentioned to as Luffy’s first mate. Oda has left this to the fans, who have created numerous hypotheses claiming Zoro is the first mate.

Zoro Is Officially The First Crewmate Of Monkey D. Luffy

The crew’s rank has been a source of contention and interpretation throughout the manga and anime. While it is widely accepted that Zoro is an important member of the crew, he is never expressly referred to as Luffy’s first mate. During a scene after Zoro fight Mihawk, Zoro is heard saying:

“I, Roronoa Zoro vow to stand by your side, from now until the end, until we find the one piece or die trying, So bring on the marines or pirates or sea beasts, you’re my captain Luffy and I’m your first mate”

This has officially confirmed Zoro as the first mate of Luffy and has ended the long fight between the fans about who is the fist mate among Zoro, Sanji and Nami. This has added dimension to Zoro’s character and his crucial role within the crew, providing a new viewpoint on the Straw Hat Pirates’ members.
