Netflix’s One Piece series represents a live-action reimagining of the well-known manga and anime franchise bearing the same title. Created by Eiichiro Oda, the series is produced by Tomorrow Studios in conjunction with Netflix. Matt Owens and Steven Maeda shoulder the responsibilities of writing, executive producing, and leading the show as its showrunners. But what about the salaries of the cast?
The web series features a cast including Iñaki Godoy, Mackenyu, Emily Rudd, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Taz Skylar. The inaugural season of One Piece consists of eight episodes and was released on Netflix on August 31, 2023.
Taz Skylar Getting Paid Less Despite An Important Role
In the Netflix live-action rendition of the beloved manga and anime series One Piece, actor Taz Skylar portrays the character of Sanji. Sanji, a vital member of the Black Leg Pirates, assumes the role of the crew’s cook and ranks as their third-most formidable member. He possesses expertise in martial arts, with kicks being his predominant combat technique. Additionally, Sanji is known for his charismatic appeal to women and upholds a profound code of chivalry.
However, despite playing an important character in the series, Taz Skylar is getting paid less than his co-stars, including Emily Rudd and Mackenyu. Taz Skylar’s compensation for his role in One Piece amounts to $150,000, which is fairly less compared to Mackenyu’s payout of $220,000 and Emily Rudd’s cheque of $200,000.
Skylar has openly discussed the complexities associated with portraying Sanji in a live-action adaptation. He emphasized his commitment to remaining faithful to the character’s anime origins while infusing his unique interpretation into the role. He underscored the collaborative efforts with the showrunners and fellow cast members to craft an authentic and convincing portrayal of Sanji in the series.
Garp’s Inclusion In The Series Criticized By Fans
Artur, recognized as @newworldartur on Twitter and widely acknowledged within the community for his role as the administrator of the Library of Ohara encyclopedia site dedicated to the series, expressed the view that Garp’s initial appearance in the series felt contrived.
“Certain storylines had to be cut or condensed for better pacing, and while some I’m glad were skipped, some others felt sorely missing. Instead, other storylines that felt very redundant were given too much screentime, such as Garp’s forced inclusion into the story.”
Furthermore, Arthur commended the adaptation as a whole, affirming that it unquestionably lives up to the considerable anticipation. He also noted that the introduction of Garp has provided subtle hints about future installments within the same series.
One Piece is available for streaming on Netflix.
