Halle Berry has been known around the world for portraying several iconic roles throughout her Hollywood career. From being a Bond girl to Catwoman, the actress has journeyed through both ups and downs and also some controversies.
Back in 2001, Halle Berry starred alongside John Travolta and Hugh Jackman in a movie titled Swordfish. Undressing herself in the movie, Berry found herself in quite a controversy when a rumor was spread that the actress was paid extra for her undressed role in the movie!
Halle Berry Denied Rumors of Getting Paid Extra For Her Naked Role
The 2001 movie saw John Travolta, Hugh Jackman, and Halle Berry, in a heist movie and a chance to change their lives forever. Although the movie received average reviews and wasn’t something out of the ordinary, Swordfish did, however, garner much attention and controversy!
With Berry in the lead role, there was a scene that became notoriously famous for showcasing Berry in her lingerie. During the release of the film, there were even rumors that the John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum actress was paid extra for the lingerie scene. In an interview, Halle Berry talked about the issue at hand and plainly stated that it was supposed to be a metaphor for how her character was the only one in charge of herself and no one else.
“I did the scene because it showed you that the character was in control of her sexuality and very comfortable with herself. The challenge for me was to pull it off and not just sit there naked and looking scared to death like I initially felt.”
Although Berry had not found confidence in herself and her body before, it was actually veteran actor John Travolta, who walked on the sets of Swordfish one day and accidentally complimented the actress.
John Travolta Gave Confidence To Halle Berry
In an interview, the Pulp Fiction actor talked about how one day, he went on the sets of Swordfish and saw Halle Berry. Stating something along the lines of “What a body!”, Berry felt confidence rising in herself when Travolta complimented her.
“I walked on the set, looked at her and said, ‘What a body!’ At that point, everybody cracked up and it was fine,”
In the end, the Hugh Jackman and John Travolta starrer eventually failed at the global box office as Swordfish earned a meager $147 million. The movie received a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDB but a record low of 26% on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Halle Berry’s controversial scene, Swordfish is currently available to stream on Prime Video in the U.S.
