Guillermo del Toro has once again proved why he is one of the best directors in the film industry with the stop-motion version of Pinocchio. The film is based on Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio and the director considers it his passion project. After years of hard work and effort, he was able to bring the wooden puppet to life. Pinocchio was released in November in theatres and started streaming on Netflix on December 9.
It is considered another gem of the Mexican filmmaker as the film continuously receives positive reviews. People have even started comparing del Toro’s version with Disney’s saying that it’s much better than what Disney made with Tom Hanks. However, the Shape of Water director believes that this is not enough as he shares that he would continue to fight for animation in Hollywood.
Guillermo del Toro Will Continue to Fight For Animation in Hollywood
During the red carpet premiere of Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro shared his beliefs regarding animation being a medium that can tell complex and gorgeous stories. The Oscar-winning director shared that animations should not be considered a genre only for children.
“We wanted to show that animation is not a genre for kids,” del Toro explained. And he proved it with Pinocchio as it is a darker version of the children’s fairy tale. He once again shared his opinion at a Netflix event.
Often referred to as the Three Amigos of Cinema, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro Iñárritu got together to discuss their recent project at Academy Museum in Los Angeles. While discussing his recent film, del Toro shared that establishing animation as cinema still requires a lot of work.
He said, “It’s a battle I’ll keep fighting.” Earlier, the Cronos director shared that animation films need the recognition they deserve. During an interview, he said that if an animated film is “amongst the 10 best” films of a year, it should be nominated under the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards.

Guillermo del Toro has impressed everyone with his adaptation of Pinocchio. The director is continuously receiving praise for how he presented a children’s fairy tale with a dark twist. People are not supportive of his idea of promoting animation as just a kid’s genre.
People are also glad to see filmmakers like del Toro calling animation the one of best mediums for storytelling. Although it might take a little longer for this genre to be more than just a kid’s genre, Guillermo del Toro is ready to give his all to make animation one of the best mediums for filmmaking.
And people believe that filmmakers like Mimic director could make it possible with more films like “GDT, Pinocchio, and Puss in Boots 2.” They are expecting that the director would continue to make such films in the future as well.
