Chris Rock has solidified his legacy as a stand-up comedian but another trait that makes him stand out is his blunt way of stating his opinions which sometimes gets quite straightforward. Something similar happened when he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center earlier this year.
During his speech, he gave a shoutout to his longtime pal, Adam Sandler, and dissed the Academy Awards for not giving him an Oscar nomination.
Chris Rock Slammed The Oscars for Not Nominating Adam Sandler
The 58-year-old actor-comedian, Chris Rock was honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center this year. During the occasion, he chose to slam the Academy Awards for their failure to nominate his old friend, Adam Sandler despite his great talent.
While praising his friend’s 2019 film, Uncut Gems, he mentioned,
“We all work hard, but nobody works as hard as the Sandman.”
Referring to how he was not nominated for his hard work in the film, he slammed the Oscars stating,
“Nobody comes even close, so the Oscars, you know, they’re f—ing a–holes, and if they don’t want to give my man his props, then we will tonight.”
Despite working in the industry for so long, Sandler has been unable to get any Oscar nominations, winning one is quite far. The duo has enjoyed a friendship bond for over three decades. While Sandler’s bond with the Academy feels quite uptight, Rock had his own bitter experience at the Oscars when Will Smith slapped him last year.
Chris Rock Talked About The Infamous Oscars Slap Incident
Last year, when the comedian was performing his presenter duties, his remarks on Will Smith’s wife led the Emancipation actor to assault him on stage. This was dubbed the infamous slap incident.
In reference to his assault, he also gave a shout-out to former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul, who was attacked in their San Francisco home last year.
“Paul Pelosi, the only guy who knows how I felt,” Rock said. “Just me and you, Paul. Just me and you, babe.”
Meanwhile, the 2022 Oscars incident happened after Rock cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald look stating her look resembles the GI Jane protagonist. For the unversed, she suffers from a medical condition called alopecia which results in hair fall that she has addressed in public.
His remarks offended the couple with Smith charging on him on the live stage to slap the Amsterdam actor. After the incident, Smith issued a public apology followed by his resignation from the Academy. He was also banned from attending the events for a decade following the incident.
