The actor entertains the audience with his incredible on-screen persona and exceptional cinematic skills, which stand him apart from the crowd.
In his storied career, he has built epic filmography by starring in dozens of blockbuster, action-packed and thrilling movies that have become fan favorites over the years, making him one of the most in-demand and talked about celebrities in America. In 2013, the actor starred in the American post-apocalyptic action-adventure movie Oblivion, in which he played the character of Jack Harper.
Despite earning decent numbers, this project is considered his most underrated movie for several reasons. Nevertheless, the film director Joseph Kosinski once revealed an intriguing anecdote, sharing how he agreed to be part of this film after learning about it at Comic-Con in 2010.
Joseph Kosinski Reveals How Tom Cruise Agreed To Work in Oblivion
Tom Cruise has been an integral part of many long-running and lucrative franchises in Hollywood that have helped him cement his top-shelf spot in showbiz. Many young talented stars look up to him for inspiration, for he is a brilliant actor who works relentlessly to give his best in each of his projects. Over the years, the 61-year-old actor has selected his films carefully.
Director Joseph Kosinski, who collaborated with Cruise on his passion project Oblivion, once opened up about how the talented actor agreed to work on this flick after learning about it at the Comic Con. In the movie, the Top Gun star played the role of a technician name Jack Harper who works to repair drones on Earth. In a candid interview, Kosinski told Collider,
“He was really enthusiastic, and we just hit it off immediately as to what the film was really about. I got a call from his agent right after the meeting saying, ‘No, seriously, normally it doesn’t work this way … but he’s on board a hundred percent.’ And he’s been a hundred percent committed to this project since that first meeting.”
The filmmaker further gushed about working with the actor and claimed that he learned a lot from Cruise, saying,
“It was an amazing process. I learned a lot from him. He’s worked with all of my heroes literally, and just is so knowledgeable … So through him, I was learning from Stanley Kubrick and Michael Mann and Ridley Scott and Sydney Pollack. I would say any director that has a shot at working with Tom, do not hesitate.”
Despite his remarkable performance, some claim it lacks creativity. The movie is considered Tom Cruise’s most underrated project, even though it grossed $287 million at the global box office.
Why is Oblivion considered Tom Cruise’s most Underrated film?
The 2013 American post-apocalyptic action-adventure film Oblivion had a groundbreaking plot, a sharp departure from the existing corpus of dystopian sci-fi films. The incredible performances by Hollywood legend Tom Cruise and his co-stars in the film lifted the movie to great heights, and director Joseph Kosinski’s genius direction skills earned him critical acclaim.
Despite over-the-top narration and visually appealing scenes, stunning action work, breathtaking cinematography, and crisp dialogue, the film is one of Cruise‘s most underrated movies of all time. According to reports, the director went to extreme lengths while working on this project. He wanted to show all the significant elements effectively, so he consulted a panel of scientists to verify the accuracy of technology aspects and science behind those sequences in order to make them appear legitimate and authentic.
Nevertheless, it’s unfortunate that Oblivion has been overshadowed by an eclipse by other movies of the Top Gun star. It is a hidden gem and deserves to receive its due recognition from audiences and critics alike.
