Nintendo Switch 2 has been the talk of the town for quite some time. Now recent reports have revealed that the console was ‘secretly’ showcased to select developers at Gamescom 2023. Although Nintendo has not commented on any such reports, it looks like the official Nintendo Switch 2 announcement is not far away.

New reports also suggest that Nintendo briefed Call of Duty publisher Activision about its new generation of hardware, in December last year. This was revealed in internal emails as part of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) vs. Microsoft trial over the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
Nintendo Switch 2 Is Closer to PS4 in Performance
According to the email, as reported on The Verge, Activision and Nintendo executives including Activision Head Bobby Kotick and Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa, met on December 15, 2022, for a discussion on the next-generation Switch. The email was hugely redacted but it showed a note from Bobby Kotick, that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be closer to PS4/ Xbox One performance-wise. The note stated:
“Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4 / Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG Switch as well.
It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early.”

The FTC had revealed that there was an agreement in place between Activision and Nintendo to bring a Call of Duty to its future console if Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is approved. Kotick also said that they “regretted” not bringing Call of Duty for Nintendo owners.
What Is Known About the Nintendo Switch 2 So Far?
Nintendo Switch was released over six years ago and currently, everything known about Nintendo Switch 2 is purely rumour as nothing has been confirmed by Nintendo. Recently it was reported an improved version of the Switch title Zelda: Breath of the Wild was shown running on Nintendo Switch 2, at Gamescom 2023.

Another report by VGC stated that Nintendo actually showcased The Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 tech demo running on target specs for Nintendo’s next console which was originally released to showcase the power of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X back in 2021. The demo reportedly used Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling technology and ray-tracing and graphics as good as next-gen consoles of Sony and Microsoft.
Although this report is contrary to what Kotick said at the Microsoft vs. FTC hearing about the performance of Switch 2, it is still exciting to anticipate what Nintendo could have in store for its device owners. There are numerous titles announced by Nintendo for 2024 and with the rumoured release of Nintendo Switch 2 next year, these games could also be launch titles on the console.
