The Real Reasons Why Nicole Kidman Lost Panic Room

Nicole Kidman is one of the best actresses in Hollywood
Nicole Kidman lost the Panic Room role to Jodie Foster

It was supposed to be Nicole Kidman playing Kristen Stewart’s mother in Panic Room. Appearing in an episode of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Kidman and Stewart recalled the movie. “We were meant to work together,” Kidman told Stewart.

“I remember [director] David Fincher saying, ‘Oh my god, we have discovered the most incredible actress.’ And then I got injured and ended up not playing your mama.”

Although the role went to Jodie Foster, Kidman, and Stewart shared a few moments on set.“We spent a couple of weeks rehearsing,” Stewart recalled.

“I have a vivid memory of it, because the way you treat kids is so telling. I felt like I was buds with you. It was two or three weeks, but I was always like, ‘She’s one of my friends.’ You gave me walkie-talkies for Christmas.”

Kidman took a moment to appreciate Stewert for her brilliant performance in the movie. “Here we are decades later, hanging in there,” Kidman said. “And you’re amazing; Fincher was right, as he always is,” she added. Panic Room would have been another wonderful addition to Kidman’s thriving career but she never mentioned regretting losing the role.

Foster was undoubtedly great in Panic Room. Although the generally conceived notion says that it is hard to work with David Fincher as  Jake Gyllenhaal refused to work with him again, Foster is all praise for the director. It is Fincher’s experience and vision to elevate the thrill in the movie that made $200 million worldwide against a $50 million budget. Talking to Marc Maron of the WTF With Marc Maron podcast, the Oscar-winning actor revealed her experience working with the legendary director. “He just makes me want to put my arms around him and tell him, ‘You know what, it is gonna be okay. Like, chillax,’” Foster said of the director. “And I love him for it. I love him that he is so committed… And he gives 100,000 times more than anybody else on the movie. He can do any of our jobs better than we can,” she added.

“He doesn’t drive me crazy. I love him. He makes me laugh. And it’s true that it’s annoying that you have to do as many takes as you do… And despite all of that, like, I would just do anything for him. Yeah, I would do anything for that guy.”

Of course, the retakes would sometimes drive her crazy as she had to fulfill his prefer vision despite her being pregnant while shooting the film. Foster further added that Fincher is a better actor than her and she’d want to be him for his meticulousness.

Foster is set to appear in the Netflix movie Nyad which is scheduled for September 2023 release.
