To this day, Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered one of the best-animated shows ever made. Packed to the brim with amazing characters, great voice acting, brilliant world-building, and outstanding animation the fandom continues to grow but there have been some bumps along the way. The live-action movie is critically panned, rightfully so, and the planned live-action Netflix has also met its fair share of behind-the-scenes drama.
Weeks ago, it was announced that Avatar creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko would be starting their very own studio! That means more spin-off ideas and an animated theatrical film that is set to start production later this year. In a recent interview with Deadline, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins got a chance to talk about the opportunity of continuing the franchise.
Robbins goes on to say that:
“We are in the early stages of developing and exploring what we are calling an entire Avatar Airbender universe,” he exclaims. “Mike and Bryan are hard at work, and I think that universe will encompass definitely a theatrical film, animation, certainly multiple TV series, and probably multiple films. I think we will be ready very soon to tell the world what is coming first but we are not there yet because we’re in early stages of creative development.
Robbins then continues to say:
We are excited about filling our own platforms today,” he said. “We will strategically license context to other places for different reasons but mostly our focus is on filling our own platforms starting with linear TV.”
The Legend of Korra may have split the fanbase but with DiMartino and Konietzko now in charge of their very own Avatar projects, the possibilities for future Paramount+ shows are unlimited! While The Last Airbender only lasted for 3 seasons, fans felt that there were still some unanswered questions that needed to be resolved. Fortunately, there’s a batch of graphic novels that canonically leave off where the show ended. An adaptation on the search for Zuko’s mother comes to mind. Other ideas that would also cool to see are for instance a series revolving around Avatar Kyoshi, Team Avatar in their adulthood, a Korra sequel show, or a series about the next Avatar.
