Netflix Ends a Long Running Anime Curse After Spending Over $138 Million on ‘One Piece’ Live Action Series

One Piece Live Action was announced in July 2017. Hiroyuki Nakano announced it. The announcement said that Shueisha would partner with Tomorrow Studios to make a live-action adaptation of one of the longest-running anime, One Piece. Eiichiro Oda would be a part of the production team. The announcement was made on the 20th anniversary of the legendary manga.

The fans were going through an unusual feeling. They were happy that their favourite anime was coming to the live-action category. On the other hand, the history of anime live-action made them less confident with each moment. But after everything, Netflix released One Piece Live Action on 31 August 2023. The show became a massive hit, breaking a significant curse on its way to success.

The anime live adaptation was an area where nobody wanted to venture. Success was a myth in this category until Monkey D. Luffy came. On its first day, the show streamed in more than 84 countries. Breaking the record of major Netflix shows like Wednesday and The Stranger Things season 4. But it was not easy. The show cost $138 Million to bind every piece together to make a masterpiece.

Few changes were made, but the fans loved it. The show helped garner new fans for Eiichiro Oda’s creation. The live-action adaptation helped the anime to create a stronghold over Western countries. For the first few days after its release, Netflix’s One Piece Live Action was the number one show on Netflix. Inaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy), Emily Rudd (Nami), Mackenyu Maeda (Roronoa Zoro), Taz Skyler (Sanji), and Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp) did their part gracefully.

The number of flop anime live-action adaptations before One Piece is innumerable. Dragonball: Evolution, Netflix’s Death Note, Parasyte, etc. These are a few of the miserable fails in the anime live adaptation category. With One Piece paving the road for the live-action adaptation, the fans are hopeful to see better content in this category.

Eiichiro Oda Announces One Piece Live Action Season 2

Monkey D. Luffy and all of the Strawhats are going to return for season 2. One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda confirmed the news with a video. Through a Den Den Mushi, he thanked the fans for all the love and support. Then he said something that all the fans had been waiting for. Oda sensei said that Netflix has renewed One Piece Live Action for season 2. He ended the video by saying that the Strawhats needed a great doctor on their ship, and the camera focused on him drawing a picture of Tony Tony Chopper.

This was a hint that Tony Tony Chopper would be introduced in season 2. The fans cannot wait to see how the production team creates Chopper because he will be tough to create.
