After Andrew Garfield’s journey as Spider-Man was cut short following the poor performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Tom Holland entered the story as the most comic-accurate web-slinger to date. But among the plethora of problems that reside within The Amazing Spider-Man movies, Andrew Garfield was certainly not one of them, as he put his heart into playing the character.
And even though taking the Spider-Man gig was a dream come true for Holland, following his love for the character, he does regret accepting the role without informing Garfield prior.
Tom Holland Regrets Taking the Spider-Man Gig Without Informing Andrew Garfield
Considering Tom Holland was just 19 when he eventually landed the gig and starred in Captain America: Civil War, he didn’t inform Andrew Garfield about the matter as he was caught up in the excitement. Reflecting on the matter, Holland expressed that it still stings him to this day, as he was able to put him in Garfield’s shoes, claiming that he’d have really struggled to bounce back.
“That’s because of my naivete as a kid,” he said. “I was 19 when I got cast. I was so caught up in getting the role that I never took any time to think about what it must have been like for him. If I’d made my second movie and it didn’t necessarily deliver in the way it should have done and they recast me, I would really struggle to bounce back.”
Further admiring how Andrew Garfield bounced back after the heavy blow through acclaimed movies like Hacksaw Ridge, Holland wished he could’ve said to Garfield, “You know I can’t turn down this opportunity.”Also read: “Look at the Dork, the last guy who played Spider-Man”: 1 Man Absolutely Hates Marvel Casting Tom Holland As Spider-Man And He Has A Bold Reason For It
Things Weren’t Bleak Between Them in Spider-Man: No Way Home
But during their time together in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which witnessed the return of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Holland got the opportunity to make amends with Garfield. And unsurprisingly things weren’t bleak between the Hacksaw Ridge Star and Holland, as the trio of Garfield, Holland, and Maguire got along pretty well, creating a wholesome bond throughout the filming process.
“It was wonderful,” Holland said. “Myself, Andrew, Tobey – we have this amazing bond as three people who have been through something that is so unique that we really are like brothers. We have a great group chat and we catch up every now and then. It’s called the Spider-Boys.”
While Tom Holland is set to continue his journey in the MCU as the web-head in the foreseeable future, it’d have been nice if Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man got the same treatment as his peers.
The Amazing Spider-Man movies are available to stream on Disney Plus.
