With 31 extremely impressive years worth of characters / story and content, the newest instalment in the Mortal Kombat franchise is launching in September with a very impressive roster of 24 characters both classic and new.
With Mortal Kombat 1 the game is taking shape in the form of a soft reboot of the franchise with a take on the multiverse attempt of telling the story with the pre existing characters. In this universe we
Liu Kang as a God, but will there be Other Gods Included?
Anybody familiar with the Mortal Kombat franchise can associate the game with a few key features, controversy, violence, fighting and even more violence! With that the excitement behind a new title is always shrouded in a solid story, a fantastic line up of variation when it comes to characters and even some surprise characters in the form of DLC.

Using the roster very cleverly, this time around we see support characters alongside the main cast of characters used to drive the fighting forward. A lot of which is used very similar to how team up attacks are used in other popular fighting games for example the Marvel vs Capcom series utilises this mechanic quite heavily and this will be the first time we see it in a Mortal Kombat game. For Mortal Kombat 1 they are referred to as ‘Kameos’ and they show character designs alongside very familiar moves from the very first Mortal Kombat using classic attacks to assist your character in the heat of the fight.
These ‘Kameo’ characters are unplayable as they serve no purpose to the progression of the story however they do add a good bit of fun to the fight where needed with their own skill and move set and also some cool looking assisted X-Ray attacks which have become extremely popular since they were first introduced in Mortal Kombat 9.
Already announced as upcoming character DLC we are getting extremely popular characters known more for their intent and nature to destroy rather than their heroics, so they will fit perfectly in the roster for Mortal Kombat.
First up is Omni-man from the Amazon Prime series and Mark Miller graphic novel ‘Invincible’, shown as earth’s protector and family man, but behind the scenes his intentions are far from heroic. Second up we have an all rounder in the form of Homelander taken from the Amazon Prime series and graphic novel The Boys by Garth Ennis. Homelander is all things vulgar, he isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and when it comes to life either human, animal or otherworldly he is less than caring, another character that would slip into Mortal Kombat’s roster and be more than welcome.

With the marketing going full speed ahead we are seeing story based trailers dropping left & right for Mortal Kombat 1 in it’s run up to release alongside this we are seeing more and more new faces alongside gameplay. With the ‘Kameo’ characters inclusion bringing the classic Mortal Kombat line up to the table we can only speculate on who is going to be in the final roster when the game releases on the 14th of September.
This year has also seen the launch of Street Fighter 6 with its impressive battle system both online and offline via the battle hub, and with Tekken 8 on the horizon with it’s new battle system it is good to see that a 31 year old classic fighting game can well and truly still be alive and wanting to push the boundaries in order to be new and inventive.
