With a new Mortal Kombat title just over a month away, NetherRealm Studios is adding some fuel to the hype train with another Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Kast. As September 19th draws closer and closer, Mortal Kombat fans are running themselves ragged with speculation over which characters will enter the roster.
As previous Kombat Kasts have brought new character announcements, it’s not hard to see why fans are excited about the upcoming edition of the show. Will NetherRealm bring back an old fan favorite, or will they introduce someone new?
What New Characters Could Be Announced at the Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Kast?
There aren’t many slots left for new characters in Mortal Kombat 1, as 19 of 24 characters have already been announced for launch. The scarcity of remaining spots makes the speculation all the more compelling. Could Nitara, who last made a cameo in Mortal Kombat 11, make the cut? Or perhaps fan favorites could be reintroduced, like Noob Saibot or Kano?

Ed Boon has gone on record stating that Mortal Kombat 1 takes place in a “brand new universe,” so it makes sense that fans are clamoring for their favorite characters from the old universe to have a spot on the roster. Boon himself has fed into the speculation: on July 29th, he posted to Twitter remarking upon an unfamiliar face in the game’s DreamCon 2023 trailer:
Who dis, indeed. Fans compared the mysterious character’s appearance to that of Kai, the Shaolin monk introduced in 1997 with Mortal Kombat 4. Others remained skeptical of that theory. Nevertheless, this mystery man’s identity might be revealed during the next Kombat Kast. For all we know, he could even be a character from the 2022 film adaptation of Mortal Kombat, such as the protagonist Cole Young.
The possibilities are endless for new additions to the Mortal Kombat 1 roster, and we’ll just have to wait and see who makes the cut during the next Mortal Kombat 1 Kombat Kast.
Returning Faces to Mortal Kombat 1
A new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 released at EVO 2023 revealed the return of two fan-favorite characters: Ashrah and Reptile. Reptile, in particular, was a highly-anticipated reveal, as he has appeared (both as a player character and as an in-cutscene cameo) in several Mortal Kombat titles. The return of the Kombat Kast means that NetherRealm has the opportunity to explain more about these returning characters and their abilities.

The incoming return of Kombat Kast is the perfect time to put the spotlight on them.
