A couple of months ago, we received a release trailer for Mortal Kombat 1; this confused a lot of fans as the last Mortal Kombat that was released was Mortal Kombat 11. Back in May, the trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 was released, and many gamers have been clawing for answers to the important question of why it has the number 1. Ed Boon has spoken out about this during a Kommunity chat after the trailer was revealed, informing gamers that “Mortal Kombat is the beginning of a universe” and that “This is not a continuation of the Mortal Kombat 11 story, so the characters have completely different roles in this new timeline and we really wanted to punctuate that with our title.”.

This statement has left many gamers excited as Ed Boon has described it like this “So this is Mortal Kombat 1, it is a brand new beginning, you’re going to be seeing these characters reintroduced in their new roles, with new relationships with each other, and that’s the main catalyst for calling it Mortal Kombat 1.”. The reasoning behind this is that story-wise the world Mortal Kombat is set in the universe will be “reborn” and created anew by the Fire God, leading to the changes that we will experience.

What else does this mean for the popular franchise?

As many gamers will have noticed, the name change isn’t the only thing that has changed about Mortal Kombat 1, as the usual poster boys Scorpion and Sub-Zero are not on the cover art. They have been replaced by Liu Kang, which is the developer’s way of showing how the franchise is now going in a different direction from its older versions and creating a brand new timeline and story. This may scare a lot of fans as they are unsure where this new direction will take such a popular franchise, but this could lead it in a well-needed direction so that new fans can enter a new story.

So far, we have only received a few trailers revealing what we will be getting in this reboot of such a famous franchise, but that has caused many fans to already be excited as Mortal Kombat 1 currently has a release date set for September 19th and so far will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox series X/S, Nintendo Switch and also PC through services like Steam and Epic Game Store.

What do you think about this information? Will it encourage you to try out Mortal Kombat 1 if you haven’t played a game from the franchise before, or has it excited the fire in older players looking for new fatalities and gory fighting?
