Ten years ago, in June 2013, director James DeMonaco introduced the world to the anthology media franchise, The Purge. Based in a dystopian world, the film series follows an annual event that decriminalizes every crime for 12 hours. And the makers have been planning Purge 6 in the popular series, followed by the release of the fifth installment in the franchise, The Forever Purge. While it was allegedly intended to be the last movie in the film series, DeMonaco confirmed his plans for future projects in the franchise.
He also shared that the script for the sixth Purge film is completed. However, despite everything on track, the director has recently revealed that the film has not entered production yet.
James DeMonaco Explains Why Purge 6 is Stuck in Limbo
Followed by the release of The Forever Purge, director James DeMonaco has shared that the sixth film in the franchise would be “all about Frank [Grillo].” The Captain America actor portrays Leo Barnes in the film series and is expected to reprise his role in Purge 6.
However, The Purge director has recently shared that the project is “kinda in limbo” as of now. During an interview with The Playlist, he shared that he wanted to bring back Leo Barnes in a “bigger and a little more epic” sixth installment. The director also stated that the script is ready, and the studio has seen it as well.
However, they are concerned about the budget of the film. “It’s written it’s in [Universal’s] hands. I think they’re scared about the budget,” DeMonaco said. He also explained the plot of the movie, which “presents a fractured America.”
“The America I present in Purge 6 is where we all are separated by ideology and sexual preference. So, the states are broken down in different ways,” the Staten Island director explained. The studio has not said anything regarding Purge 6 so far.

Frank Grillo Would be the Centre of Purge 6
Director James DeMonaco has been very clear about his ideas for Purge 6. He has shared that he plans to focus the story of the next movie on Grillo’s character Leo Barnes. The Stephanie actor joined the franchise with the 2014 film The Purge: Anarchy. Sergeant Leo Barnes aims to find his son’s killer on the Purge Night and take his revenge.
Talking about the character during an interview with Slash Film, DeMonaco said that the upcoming movie is “all about the Leo character.” He shared that he wishes to bring the actor back in the next film, as he would be the center of the next movie. “When I came up with Purge 6, he was the center of the idea,” he said. And James DeMonaco hopes for Grillo to come back as well. The release date for Purge 6 is not available yet.
