Behaviour Interactive’s latest release Meet Your Maker has finally dropped, and players around the world are introducing themselves to the world of building, raiding, and saving humanity one outpost at a time. Set in a future where the Earth we know has been wiped out, players can find it a little overwhelming when first starting the tutorial, but by the time you’ve finished reading these handy tips’n’tricks we’ve curated for you from our time with the game for our review, you’ll end up being a Custodial God. The game is split into two distinct parts; building and raiding. Mastering one of these isn’t enough and mastering both will take time.
Building
Building is largely limited only by the player’s imagination, with no two outposts being the same, it can be a little daunting to start fresh and build your own.
Mods are the way to go. All of the traps and guards available have added modifications that can be unlocked to add further variety to your outposts defenses. Want to lull your enemies into a false sense of security? Choose the second wave mod and hide your traps and guards until after the raider has collected the GenMat, and rather than having a simple jaunt back out to the surface and an easy escape, they have to navigate fresh and unknown traps again.
Vary your traps and guards. You’ll want to keep the raiders guessing as they’re traversing your maze of death. Don’t use the same trap again and and again. Throw a Boltshot on the wall, a holocube on the floor and a lava cube beneath that. Have guards ambush the raiders whilst they’re busy trying to deal with your traps. Make use of the ability to set your guards patrol patterns. There’s numerous different traps, guards and mods for them. Make use of every one of them as you unlock them.

Complicated is better. Part of the building process is having a constant path for the little GenMat collecting robot to go about his business. This is just the game’s less than subtle excuse to ensure outposts are actually possible to complete for players. Whilst this is a rule you have to follow, the game doesn’t dictate how you follow it. Don’t just have a simple A to B. Throw multiple corners into it. Different rooms. Dead end corridors. Go up. Go down. After you’ve done all that, throw in traps and guards. Make. It. Difficult.
Build. Defend. Improve. Make sure you’re using the game’s replay system. Watch raiders attempts at beating your outposts. Improve the parts of them that posed no problem using tje knowledge gained. Modify what you’ve already done until you’re sure it’s more difficult and deadly than when you sstarted. It takes time, but try to do this each time for each of your outposts and you’ll soon see a huge improvement in how many and how often your outposts are killing raiders.
Raiding
Raiding requires a considerable amount of patience and stubbornness. You’ll die constantly and want to give up. Here’s a few tips that’ll make raiding a little less stressful and a lot more fun.
Don’t forget the hardware. Easily forgotten but massively helpful is hardware. Initially you’ll have access just to the standard grenades, but quickly you’ll end up with a few different options to help you out of a sticky situation. Make sure you’re stocking up on your chosen hardware before you set out to your next outpost. There’s no way of buying more once you’ve deployed, so save yourself some time and aggro and take some with you.
Be patient. Take your time. Look everywhere. The key to any good raid is to quickly establish the actual path to the GenMat, where the guards and traps are and how you can exploit the map to your advantage. Take your time. Look round corners, don’t just go barrelling through the level all gung-ho, because you will die. A lot. If you do die on a raid you want to make it worthwhile and a learning experience, and that comes from always being aware of what’s around you.

Got a mate? Bring them. Meet Your Maker is fun. Meet Your Maker is ridiculously good fun with a friend, so hopefully you have at least one to bring along. Not only will you have an easier time with some of the most brutal outposts, but unlike when you play alone, if a trap or guard manages to best you, your co-op partner can revive you and vice versa. This takes a little of the urgency away from the game, but allows an easier difficulty curve for those that just can’t master the game on their own.
Grapple away. The grappling hook isn’t implicitly explained during the tutorial and like a few things in the game, is actually left to the player to figure out. The grappling hook isn’t exactly an innovative feature in Meet Your Maker and doesn’t break the mould on what it offers, however it will regularly save your life. Grow accustomed to using it and using it well, whether it’s to fly up the ceiling after triggering a holocube or to stay off the floor after several bomb ejectors have activated, spewing their contents towards you.
General
Some tips are useful no matter whether you’re raiding, building or just spending your time trying to figure out what’s actually going on in this futuristic, apocalyptic hellscape.
The more outposts the better. When you get the hang of building and building quickly, you’ll notice that you’re able to create up to 200 outposts before you have to start deleting them. Unfortunately though, of those two hundred only five can be activated and collecting resources for you, so ensure you’re making use of this. Get those resources!
Upgrade and make use of your advisors. The five advisors each improve one area of expertise, from traps to guards, hardware and more besides. Not immediately obvious is how you upgrade them, but put simply, you play the game. Every outpost you raid you’re collecting resources that’ll be used in a multitude of ways, but first and foremost is the levelling up of your advisors.
These tips are just the start of becoming a God at Meet Your Maker, as unfortunately there is no quick and easy way to become great at the game besides just playing it. With the constant dripping of content from Behaviour it’s likely players will be adapting their playstyles constantly, so what may help now might hinder in the future, but for now hopefully some of what is here will help you get started!
