Even a punch from Mel Gibson was not enough to stop Frank Grillo from showing his acting skills. Considered a significant action hero, Grillo has been a part of many projects including a major franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The roles of Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones in the MCU and Leo Barnes in The Purge franchise catapulted the actor to worldwide stardom.
The incident in discussion here is related to Frank Grillo’s 2020 action science-fiction flick titled Boss Level starring him alongside the Oscar-winners Mel Gibson and Michelle Yeoh. As stated by the actor, Gibson dislocated his jaw mistakenly while filming a fight sequence for the movie.
What happened between Frank Grillo and Mel Gibson during Boss Level filming?
The 2020 action science-fiction flick portrays the Crossbones star as a retired special forces soldier who is stuck in a time loop. Boss Level showed the Braveheart fame taking the role of antagonist Colonel Clive Ventor.
In an interview with ABC News, Frank Grillo admitted that the filming of Boss Level was a memorable yet painful experience for him. According to the Captain America: Civil War actor, the fight sequence with the Hacksaw Ridge director will be a memorable experience for him.
“The one fight I had with Mel — you would think it would be, but he’s not really comfortable with striking. And so I said, ‘Mel, when you throw the punch…make sure you don’t lean in because you’ll catch me.’ And the first punch he throws, he comes around and he elbows me in face.”
He added:
“Now he’s got Popeye forearms. So we say, Cut. And he goes, ‘You OK?’ And I’m like, ‘Uh huh.’ Like, I don’t want to get Mel upset. I go back to Carnahan, I go ‘Jaw.’ He goes, ‘That bad?’ I go ‘Out.’ He had dislodged my jaw.”
But Frank Grillo showed amazing endurance skills as the 57-year-old actor continued working in that state until a medic appeared 8 hours later to fix his jaw. The schedule was cut from forty-three days to twenty-seven days which demanded the stars to work tirelessly to finish the movie within the tight deadline. Moreover, the director Joe Carnahan incorporated that shot into that movie.
Besides several significant projects, the Avengers: Endgame star recently joined James Gunn’s DCU leaving Kevin Feige’s ark which is sure to push the actor to new heights.
Why did Frank Grillo leave the MCU?
Soon after it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran will join the DCU as its new heads, many popular names were expected to change the ships from its rival MCU. Frank Grillo was quick to announce his disappointment with Marvel Studios for not exploring Crossbones’ character.
“They never told a story [about Crossbones]. The mythology of the MCU and just what Marvel has in its pool of characters, it’s so deep. Crossbones was there for a minute, but he was supposed to be there longer, then they went the direction they did.”
In the new DCU, Grillo joined in the role of Rick Flag Sr. who is going to be introduced in the animated Creature Commandos series. According to James Gunn, the movies and the series will be thoroughly connected in the new DCU. It confirms that we won’t have to wait long to see Frank Grillo sharing the screen in live-action as well with other prominent superheroes.
Boss Level can be streamed on Hulu.
