The Marvel Cinematic Universe gave us Thor, the God of Thunder and his mighty weapon – the Mjolnir. One of the strongest weapons ever made, Mjolnir was forged out of Uru, a mystical metal in the heart of a dying star. Odin enchanted with strong magic making its wielder – Thor, a force to be reckoned with. Thor has used it in battle for hundreds of years. But recently the hammer was destroyed during the events of Thor: Ragnarok. Hela, the Norse Goddess of Death, destroyed the hammer with her bare hands. Thor switched to the Stormbreaker in Infinity War. The Mjolnir was forgotten, until Loki Episode 4 brought it back.
SPOILER ALERT: Major Spoilers For Loki Episode 4 Up Ahead. Enter At Your Own Risk….
After Loki and Sylvie are captured by the TVA, barely escaping the destruction of Lamentis 1, they soon encounter the TVA’s Time Lords. After a fight that soon followed, the Loki duo discover that the Time Keepers are nothing more than remote controlled androids, with somebody else pulling the strings from behind the curtains. And right then as Loki is seemingly about to profess his love for Sylvie, he is pruned by Ravonna Renslayer. But he does not die. In the post credits scene of the same episode, we see Loki waking up in a post apocalyptic New York. And there are four different Loki time variants in front of him.
One of those Lokis is credited as “Boastful Loki”. And he is seen holding a gold colored hammer that looks eerily similar to Thor’s Mjolnir. This Loki variant is clearly a mix of Thor and Loki from a different timeline. But what is this new Mjolnir we see? And how does it change Thor and MCU’s future? Let’s find out.
Our Theory – It’s Not Mjolnir But Another Popular Asgardian Weapon
The return of the hammer into the MCU might have its origins in Marvel comics. In the comics, Odin has created quite a number of fantastic weapons, imbuing them with magic. Thor’s Mjolnir was made under instructions from Odin, who trapped a living cosmic storm within the weapon. Odin has also created other weapons like the Stormbreaker, the weapon Beta Ray Bill uses in the comics. the new time variant hammer is neither of those. We believe it is a weapon known in the comics as the Crusher.
In the comic books, The Crusher is also known as the War Hammer. It is wielded by Red Norvell, who assumed the mantle of Thor for a short while. Red Norvell was strong enough to defeat the original Thor and was revered as a great hero of Asgard. Red Norvell sacrificed his life to save Asgard. But his weapon became a powerful artefact that lived on for ages. Reinforced with powerful enchantments, Odin created the Crusher to be a perfect replica of Thor’s Mjolnir minus the worthiness enchantment.
That would explain how a Loki is able to wield this new Mjolnir like hammer. It is because the Crusher does not have that worthiness clause. The only loophole in this theory is that the Crusher has a longer handle in Marvel Comics. That is not something Marvel wouldn’t ret-con in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to keep the audiences guessing.
If that is not Crusher, then this new Loki variant could actually be one of the good ones. He may have ascended to the throne after the death of Thor and is trying to live up to his brother’s and father’s legacy. Either way, the new Norse weapon would be the talk of the town when Loki episode 5 finally hits Disney+ next Wednesday.
All eyes on deck. It’s hammer time.
