Mass Effect 4 was officially teased for the first time in November 2013, on Twitter. Although this exciting BioWare reveal happened nearly ten years ago, gamers have received very little information about the upcoming space adventure. Unfortunately, some of the most recent news from BioWare came when the company announced it was was going through layoffs and had to fire 50 employees.
This disclosure certainly did not instill confidence in gaming fans over the future of Mass Effect 4 as well as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Nevertheless, the famed developer ensured this decision was ultimately for the success of these titles.
The studio even went so far as to say the next Mass Effect saga will be helmed by Mike Gamble and that it had entered pre-production. Given the fact that Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 were only three years apart, Mass Effect 3 was two years later, and Mass Effect: Andromeda managed a five year gap, the disparity is concerning. And it will likely be several more years before gamers get to throw the classic N7 armor back on and traverse the galaxy with trusted companions.
That said, a recent leak has indicated BioWare may be returning to a tried and true story telling technique in Mass Effect 4. This will certainly inspire hope for players who enjoy the series and potentially be the revitalization needed for Mass Effect as a whole.
Mass Effect 4 May Be Returning to Old Habits By Eliminating Open World Gameplay
When it comes to Mass Effect 4, BioWare is surely going to want to bring something new and inspired to reinvigorate the space franchise. The last outing in the universe being Mass Effect: Andromeda, was less than impressive to gamers, many of which consider it to be the worst installment.
There are a variety of reasons why the game obtained average reviews including: the tone of the story, facial animations, and repetitive sequences. However, one of the greatest complaints among fans was the semi-open world environment, which was completely new to the Mass Effect series.

Several gamers expressed their disapproval over the new feature and said the title was trying too hard to copy BioWare’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, which released three years prior. No matter the reasoning, people were disappointed, but hopefully Mass Effect 4 will have learned from the mistakes of the past.
A recent Mass Effect 4 rumor appears to have come from Jez Corden, while participating in the latest release of The Xbox Two Podcast. In the episode, Corden said the following about the game:
“…I’ve heard that Mass Effect is ditching open world and going back to its classic format. I don’t know if that’s accurate one hundred percent, but it’s certainly an industry rumor.
So like if Mass Effect goes back to doing exactly what it’s known for, they’ll be celebrated for it.”
Clearly, there are industry insiders who have been discussing Mass Effect 4, and there is a consensus the game will not feature open world. Corden even goes as far to say that if this happens, BioWare will be celebrated for returning to a more linear narrative, which certainly seems to be true.
It appears the gaming community wants to see the space franchise return to its old ways, and that might just be how things play out.
Although we may not witness Commander Shepard with his army of fierce warriors in Mass Effect 4, a condensed storyline could be exactly what fans need. A return to form will be appreciated as gamers get to know new characters who emerge from the depths of space.
What do you think of the fact Mass Effect 4 could return to form and forget about semi-open world gameplay? Does it make you more excited for the return of the the famed RPG franchise? Make sure to leave a comment and let us know your thoughts.
