Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is just over the horizon, and the closer it gets to release, the more promotional material is released and therefore the more fans have to discuss. Ever since the PlayStation Showcase revealed our Peter Parker wearing the Symbiote Suit, a surprising if excellent reveal, fans have been discussing with one another just how good, or bad, the suit actually is. A consensus doesn’t seem to have been reach yet, and it’s unlikely to, but is it actually a fair criticism anyway?
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit – Origins
Insomniac Games have made no secret of their willingness to stray from the source material and tell their own story, as proven during Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Certain characters, story beats and entire scenarios from the comics were tweaked or completely changed to better fit what Insomniac were going for. The biggest example of this was the first game’s early relationship between Peter and Otto Octavius, with Peter not only being Otto’s only employee, but he viewed the eventual villain as something of a father figure, doubly ensuring the betrayal hurt all the more.
This willingness to change the established lore was further compounded in the first game’s post credit scene, with Norman Osborn approaching a tank that was revealed to have his critically ill son Harry inside it, previously thought to be away on vacation, explaining away his absence during the events of the game. This reveal was quickly followed by what is assumed to the symbiote, stretching it’s black goo substance towards Norman, hitting the glass. Of course this implies that the symbiote is either the very virus Norman has been attempting to cure him of, or in fact the substance that is keeping him alive in the meantime.
This is never covered in the comics whatsoever, and with Creative Director Bryan Intihar confirming that Eddie Brock is not the host of Venom in this universe, it has fans questioning who the host is, or is going to be.
Compare that to the origins in the original Secret Wars comics during the 80s, where Peter happens upon a machine on a far-away alien world, that happens to give him a new suit which of course turns out to be an alien symbiote… it’s more than a little different.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit Isn’t that Bad
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit itself is now the topic of discussion, with a new thread being opened every other day on Reddit, with one disgruntled fan or another criticizing the look in a number of various ways. But why? Is it actually that bad? Are fans expecting too much?
Between Twitter and other social media platforms the discourse on the suit has been quite a regular occurrence. Most fans seem to draw issue with the shoulder pad, armoured look of the suit, whilst others don’t appreciate the mask looking very much like a helmet.
Several fans seem to have missed the point slightly, commenting that “it looks alive” and “I don’t like how alive and alieny it looks”, forgetting of course this is quite literally an organism that is alive.

Whatever the opinion, it would be a fair assumption that like the previous two games we’ll be able to change our suit anyway, so there may well be other Symbiote Suits with differing looks. This should go some way in negating the fan reaction a little.
With so much discussion around the game, it isn’t long until we get to see Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s Symbiote Suit in all its glory, with the game due to launch on October 20th on PlayStation 5.
