Sony Threatens to Sue Over Off-Brand Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PlayStation Faceplates

The popular gaming and tech skin manufacturer, dbrand, is under fire after dropping their new PlayStation Faceplates inspired by the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. PlayStation was also under fire recently after dropping the official Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Console Faceplates but in extremely limited quantities. Across all retail outlets, the Spider-Man 2 Console Faceplates are sold out.

Because the demand is so high, dbrand released their version of the Spider-Man 2 PlayStation 5 Faceplate called Arachnoplates. In the past, Sony has threatened to sue dbrand over the PlayStation 5 Faceplates but after the release of Darkplates 2.0, they have been quiet. Will Sony sue dbrand over these inspired Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PlayStation Faceplates?

dbrand vs. PlayStation: Now with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Back on November 13, 2020, dbrand went to their subreddit to announce a PSA to not buy PlayStation 5 console skins. The reason is “because skinning this thing f*cking sucks.” The Reddit post would go on to show how white parts of the plastic would still show on a PlayStation 5 with a black console skin. One month later, dbrand would take to Reddit again and announce they are global leaders in PlayStation 5 Faceplates. Sony would not take this announcement lightly because at that point, they did not make any additional PlayStation 5 Faceplate colors.

After sending a cease and desist letter, Sony stopped dbrand from manufacturing PlayStation 5 Faceplates for a short while. A few days later, dbrand announced Darkplates 2.0, changing the shape of the plates and adding vents for better airflow. By making these design changes, dbrand can dodge a lawsuit while making PlayStation 5 Faceplates for its customer base.

Fast forward to last Friday, September 8, dbrand announced their Spider-Man 2 inspired Faceplates called Arachnoplates. While dbrand never explicitly said Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the Arachnoplates features webs and tendrils throughout its red and black color design.

The lack of supply versus the demand for the Spider-Man 2 PlayStation Faceplates is insane. While restocks have been happening sporadically, many fans are still left with no Spider-Man 2 Faceplates. With the hype and excitement surrounding Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, PlayStation should have expected the demand for these Faceplates to be high but they did not anticipate it.

dbrand is using PlayStation’s misstep on the Spider-Man 2 Faceplates to make more money for their pocket. The Darkplates 2.0 were announced almost six months before Sony made their first move in announcing official PlayStation 5 Faceplates, so this isn’t dbrand’s first time stepping on PlayStation’s wallet.

dbrand will not likely not receive any legal repercussions for the Arachnoplates as they’re using the Darkplates 2.0 design with the changed shape and air vents. Only time will tell if the Spider-Man 2 Faceplates will ever restock in a higher quantity release.

The dbrand Arachnoplates are available now and will ship out on October 20, the same day Spider-Man 2 launches. The Arachnoplates retail for $64.98, one cent cheaper than the retail price of the official Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PlayStation Faceplates. Then again, since they’re sold out everywhere, expect to pay double the retail price from resellers for the official PlayStation Faceplates of Spider-Man 2.
