Insomniac Games, the developers of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, are very active on their Twitter account. While they aren’t replying to everything sent their way, they respond to a lot of fan tweets. It could be questions, general excitement for the game, or continuing a thread they started. One question asked on June 17 was about a demo for the PlayStation 5 (PS5) exclusive. Insomniac Games swiftly responded, within a minute, to confirm no demo is planned for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – How a Demo Sells Copies
While the practice of releasing a game demo is uncommon in 2023, another triple-A game released a demo this year. And it was successful. FINAL FANTASY XVI is an action RPG by Square Enix. To keep its massive fan-base on the hype train, 10 days before its release, Square Enix dropped a demo containing the opening section alongside an exclusive mode to try the action gameplay.
The demo kept fans excited for FINAL FANTASY XVI and secured more pre-orders leading up to its release. One individual who pre-ordered it is Insomniac Games’ Advanced Senior Community Manager, Aaron Jason Espinoza. He enjoyed the demo so much, he pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition priced at $99.99/£99.99.
Fans of FINAL FANTASY XVI were likely going to buy the game at launch anyway. But after playing the demo, their hype for the game could lead them to purchasing a high priced version of the game like Espinoza did. The same could’ve happened with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as there are multiple editions of the game ready for pre-order.
Imagine a playable demo of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2‘s gameplay presentation from May. Trying out Peter’s new symbiote powers, Miles’ enhanced venom abilities, and experiencing the chase scene first hand. That might push someone to pre-order Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Or better yet, upgrading to the Digital Deluxe Edition or Collector’s Edition.
Creating a demo for any game requires extra work as the development team has to section off a certain part of the game and possibly implement a save transfer to the full game as well. First party PlayStation exclusives aren’t known for releasing a demo prior to release, so it’s unsurprising Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is not coming out with a demo. Insomniac Games likely wants all hands on deck to ensure they make the October release date. However, with the success of FINAL FANTASY XVI’s demo, it could change the industry’s perception on game demos.
Demo or not, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is launching on October 20th, exclusively on the PS5. Pre-orders are now available at the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Direct, and retail outlets.
